Doing a trip to Ayres Rock later this year and yesterday i started looking at the route I'll take, aswell as possible campsite locations to stay at along the way. I'm looking at staying at Augathella and Winton the first and second nights of our trip, can anyone tell me if the Fisherman's Hut (Augathella) and Long Waterhole (Winton) free camps are still available to stay at and how you rate them? Interested firstly in knowing if they still exist to stay at for a start, aswell as how busy they are / how likely are we to get a spot to stay at them around July or August. Are there any other options you'd suggest staying at instead?....we don't need power and are fully self sufficient, just looking for a half scenic overnight stop over before pushing on again the next morning,

Cheers for any replies in advance.

Long Waterhole is still open, and the Waterhole was recently cleaned out, so should be plenty of water later in the year now. Does get crowded at times, but depends how far you're prepared to camp away from the water.

Another popular spot is where the Winton-Jundah road crosses Mistake Creek, about a click past the Long Waterhole turnoff. It gets busy too, but is a smaller area.

You didn't say how long you wanted to stay at these 2 camps, Rumpig?

With regards to Winton area, there is also Crawford Ck parking bay, about 45kms East of Winton. Shelter sheds, toilets & all bitumen, but gets a bit crowded during the season. Being close to highway, you have the chance to drink extra red, or port, to help you sleep through the noise of occasional road trains.

West of Winton, on road to Boulia, is Poddy Ck parking bay, about 85kms from town.Toilets, shelter sheds & plenty of room to camp, on both sides of the bitumen. Likely to be enough wood for a fire on northern side of bitumen. Am assuming you are going to The Alice via Boulia?

They are purely overnight camps Bob, before hitting the road again the next morning. Yes we are heading to Boulia and across The Plenty, towing a Kimberley Kamper not a caravan by the way in case you are curious. Doing a 2 week return trip Brisbane to Ayres Rock and home again, which is a lazy 6000klms all up. I have been to Ayres Rock twice before, this is purely a last chance to climb The Rock trip for my kids, as the previous visit it was closed to climbing whilst we were there.
Thanks for those additional camps info.

Consider Bladensburg NP south of Winton. It’s a worthwhile destination for a night or two with camping along the creek.

Same - we stayed at Bough Shed Hole. Nice spot a bit out of town and much less burr than the common.
