Sorry, have not been through that way but why not enquire with the councils at either end.

Regarding fuel prices, have a look at the Fuelmap app, it is by the same people that do Wikicamps and it relies on user feedback for the latest pricing although I believe it also uses the WA Fuel Watch web site.

We use Fuelmap as well, but there is also GasBuddy & PetrolSpy available too.

Diesel at Nullarbor Roadhouse was about $2.00/L, early in June. Balladonia is 194.3c/L for dsl at the moment.

Brian,

If you're crossing Nullarbor, E-W, then have a few extra fuel prices for you. They are "stale", early to mid June, but prices don't seem to have risen much since that price gouging few weeks.

Ceduna, Puma(robot servo) 143.9, then we went as far as:

Mundrabilla Roadhouse, 186.0.

On return trip, before heading north to Rawlinna, we topped right up at:

Cocklebiddy, 199.0

We worked on the "theory" of filling right up at Ceduna, then just topping up at the cheaper outlets. A lot depends how much fuel you can carry too. We each had enough capacity to do 1,000kms later in the trip, without refuelling.

BP at Esperance was about 153.9, if you're going that way?

Hi Brian,
travelled the Holland Track a few months ago with a camper trailer before the rains and it was fine but fairly chopped up on the Hyden end. I wouldn't consider doing the track after rain.

One thing I noticed about fuel apps on the recent 5 weeks or so through WA, NT on a little drive, was the WA prices were all set automatically, and in fact on at least Petrol Spy, you couldn't update prices like you can in (all ?) other states.
I didn't check Fuel Map, as I tend to use Petrol Spy moreso.
Think this must be to do with the statewide Fuel Watch service, and is done automatically.

Les, the W.A. Govt has laws in place that stop fuel retailers from changing their advertised prices at a whim.

All W.A. fuel retailers have to advise FuelWatch each day, the prices they will be charging for their products the following day.

This retail fuel price information must be sent to FuelWatch by 2.00PM each day, and the prices the fuel retailer quotes to FuelWatch, must be the prices charged for the period from 6:00AM the next day, to 6:00AM the day after.

FuelWatch WA - FAQ - Fuel prices

Cheers, Ron.

Exactly Ron, Fuel Watch is a good thing in general.
While WA pricing is generally high, you can understand some of the remote location issues, but then some places obviously use their location and isolation to their advantage in having inflated pricing.
Petrol Spy app was a huge advantage to our 4 vehicle group, we managed to save quite a few $ overall by keeping an eye on pricing before we went through various areas, like the Nullabor.

Sorry if repeating what others have said. Hyden to Norseman in general is a reasonably well maintained road but the local authorities are quick to close it after rain as there can be a bit of heavy traffic servicing mines in the area and they don't want it cut up.

It is a great drive with some nice bush camps on the way if that is your thing.

Fuel on the Nullarbor? cant help with prices as they can change fast. Avoid Balladonia (why it cost 30c a litre more than Norseman which is 200km away is a mystery) and Border Village which is usually dearer than Eucla.

Last time I went Mundrabilla was a few cents cheaper than the others in WA and Penong in SA wasn't outrageous.

In Norseman itself there are many reports that the Caltex towards town is cheaper than the BP on the corner. Last two times I have been there it wasn't but we are talking only a cent or so from memory.

Enjoy the trip.

Cheers

Did the Hyden to Norseman Rd a few months ago
From Hyden the dirt section around the mines is a bit rough and once past them I could cruise along at 80Kph easily. I could do more but safety first.
Good camp at the Breakaways, Lake Johnston and Diamond rock.
All with drop toilets and good clean facilities.

I've been using this road for many years and I just drive to conditions

Diamond Rock? I think you mean McDermid Rock. Closer to Hyden, but with no facilities is Forrestania Plots.

For road conditions look at the web sites for Kondinin and Norseman (Dundas) Shires, or call them as we found their sites aren't always up to date.

http://kondinin.wa.gov.au/

http://www.dundas.wa.gov.au/

When we did it a couple of years ago we could have done it in one day but the road was so good and with scenic camp sites we had 4 nights out there. As already said, any rain and it gets closed early.

There's a good pamphlet available at info centres each end that is a great help for the drive, or this one.

We've stayed at the Breakaways a few times but I never feel comfortable there. Plus there's never been anyone else staying there! Very eerie strange feeling about it.
First time we had a real fright when a big branch dropped of a tree behind us with an almighty crash. I was out with the torch looking in case someone had rolled a big rock over the cliff at us but it seemed to be the branch so went back to bed.... but no more sleep.
Another time it was so windy I had to put extra tie downs on the camper as it was threatening to blow over. Plus the noise as bits of twigs/leaves kept hitting the canvas didn't make for a restful night.
Too much imagination? Possibly. But I'll stay further down the road next time.
Sweet dreams campers. :)

Hi Brian,

I was over there this time last month and returned a couple of weeks ago. The road was good, and we were sitting comfortably on 80-90. Coming back it was closed in Norseman townsite and they were just opening it as we drove past the northern entrance, so we came back that way.
The diesel prices were
165.9 Hyden
166.9 Norseman
195.0 Caiguna
199.0 Cocklebiddy
186.0 Eucla
159.4 Penong
157.9 Ceduna
155.9 Port Augusta

We have just crossed the Nullarbor and tried to miss the stops with high fuel prices - Balladonia was 196, Eucla 186 and border village 201

That's the typical Border Village vs Eucla difference. BV must be counting on suckers driving westwards feeling they need to fill up. Imagine how they feel when they see the Eucla price.

And typical Balladonia price as well, Zippo. They probably reckon people will think prices will rise as they head east and they had better top up.
