Hauling a luggage trailer behind a 12 seater Toyota Commuter - Darwin

Okay thought I had all of my ducks in a row so to speak. Hired a Thrifty Toyota Commuter with a luggage trailer. Slight problem: My flight gets in at 1:30 PM
Darwin. Their office closes at 2:00PM. No way I can get there and my 10 friends to the rental office in time.
Thirfty WILL leave the vehicle at the airport, but WONT allow the luggage trailer there due to
parking issues etc. So I can't go that route. I thought no problem, I will hire a U-haul trailer to go behind it but then I learned that that can be a liability for insurance not covered by thrifty etc.
It seems that all van rental agencies in
Darwin close early or are closed entirely on Sunday. Am I missing something perhaps? I would love a local from
Darwin to chime in. I can cancel the flight etc but bit of a hassle. Sure appreciate this
forum. It's a winner in so many ways. Many thanks!

Don, could you get Thrifty to deliver the vehicle, with trailer, to an arranged third party, say a service station at or near the airport?
Or alternatively, to get the service station to collect the vehicle on your behalf for a fee?

Get them to padlock it at a location of their choice (your hotel car park?) and put the key in the glovebox.
Only in Australia is giving money away so difficult. Ask that question in a place like Europe, us, nz and it isn’t even a question. They sort that right out.

Yep , its like some businesses deserve to go broke , I won't mention the actual name , but we were in a convoy of 10 vehicles / 25 people , phoned the 1 and only place in the town that served meals [the pub] to let them them know date [ 4 days away ] and a rough time for our arrival [ 7-7.30 pm ] 25 for dinner ....due to 'unexpected' weather our arrival was delayed and we actually phoned to say would still be coming , got to the pub at 8pm , yep 'kitchen is closed',,,,,,'chef' has cleaned up and gone
home ......

Did you ask 4 days prior if they will stay back for your group if you arrived late.? If no prior arrangement was made taking late arrival into account without reasonable amount of notice for their staff you couldn't expect the kitchen to stay open. Next time may be ask them to make up some sand witches or something so you get a bit to eat when you arrive late.
Remember the chef and staff would have to be paid overtime and they would require a certain amount of notice as they have their own lives to live outside of work.
I've been stuck at a servo only 1 hr inland when I was low on fuel I got there 10min after the pumps were switched off they said no..

Batts ,what part did you not read , booked for 7-7.30 which straight off means the 'chef' and the dish pig would still be cooking and be cleaning up after 8 anyway and the pub was informed ,, 1/2 hr 'late' , meals at oh lets see $25- $35 equals $650+ in the till plus drinks so round it off to $1000.oo + , that sort of money no small 1 pub town ,
population 100 can afford to ' turn away'......

Just maybe they realised someone was arriving late with an attitude. ‘Chef’ and dish pig. Labels like that really endears good service.

Dish Pig is a term that has been used forever in the hospitallity trade, it's got nothing to do with country hicks or small towns.....i'm still trying to work out how the term chef could upset someone though, that one has gone over my head.

"Dish pig" is apparently in quite common use, but I've never heard it before. I must have lived under a
rock all my life.
All this reminds me of the hoary old Army joke, that must go back to WW2 at least.

Hi Don,
I phoned Thrifty, it appears that you can pick the vehicle up at the airport but the trailer has to be collected from Stuart Park. Trailers aren't permitted at the airport.
She seems to think that something could be sorted out with the
Darwin Airport manager.
The phone no. 08 8924 2480 goes to the Stuart Park Office.
Hope this is of some help. Maybe arrangements could be made for Dave to collect for you.
