I thought it might have had people guessing for a while.

When we were a little younger, we first visited the site in the mid 1970's

There were no stairs down the cliff and you take to be careful that you did not fall.
The ship was still fairly well in tack then and you could walk through it, but now it just a skeleton.


Built in 1876, the Ethel was a 711-tonne, three-masted iron ship. She ran aground in a storm while en route to South Africa in January 1904.

One man drowned as he tried to swim ashore with a rescue line, but the rest of the crew reached land safely.

The storm drove the ship onto the beach above the low tide mark, where it remained intact for many years.

The hull finally collapsed in the mid-1980s, but there is still plenty to see, with many large pieces of rusted iron jutting from the sand, clearly marking the ship’s outline.

Ahh yes, the Ethel. Possibly named after an aunt of mine.... she was a Grand Old Lady too. lol

It was also in the 70's that we saw it. I would not want to clamber down that cliff today. I would have photos of it from then but they are film transparencies and stored away somewhere.

I do have fond memories of camping on the beach not far from there and having to haul our stuff down a not so precarious cliff. We were alone in a magical spot with a nylon pup tent just above the waterline. Ahhhh.

Yes Allan, they were the good old days where you could camp where you like......not like now.
