It's a bit complicated, but our site earns revenue from Google adwords right? Well they have "policies" and they have no humans so when the "algorithms" detects a policy violation you have to fix it or you get no money. Friday funnies keeps triggering their "censorship" and its just impossible to manage.

It's interesting to note how much Google cares about our footprint - whilst you might think the Forum traffic has declined etc over the years, our site traffic is still recording the same massive levels of audience that it always did - it's just that people use different parts of our site and services now. Now instead of Forum being the most busy, its Places, which is accessible from a webbrowser, or in-app using ExplorOz Traveller (which of course is our main business and product) so its not all doom and gloom for us. Of course, the Forum can still be very relevant if used appropriately.

Gazz - If you read Michelles post above, it's not the title that is the problem, it's the Google search bots finding words and images in the jokes, that are automatically logged as "censored".

Just more American Corporate control BS - Big Brother is truly with us now - being ruled by some American corporate a$$holes who set the rules, even for our discussions, from outside our country.

What next? Political opinions being censored by Google, because they don't agree with Googles corporate mantra?

No wonder the Poms wanted Brexit, talk about giving up your sovereignty!

Isn't this amazing that these massive social media enterprises propagate all sorts of racial and sexual content, child abuse material, and extreme political material from both the far right and the far left which leads to murder and mayhem all over the world - and yet a few harmless jokes on a forum like ours are shut down.
And in return we are flooded with reams of useless (or worse) advertising rubbish.

Indeed Wildmax. Google and Facebook have abysmal records in that regard and the former in particular also has a track record for consistent and ongoing privacy breeches, some of which they have been forced to address thanks to employee actions and USA House enquiries. Both of those platforms have been used to perpetrate lies and misinformation in just about every facet of human activity. If you want to get an idea of the sort of "not my problem" mindset which is present in many big data companies have a look at what the CEO of Palantir says about "ethics" and corporate responsibility HERE.

Google do one thing right - Chrome is by far the better browser for stability and performance and for developers Chrome is the standard we develop for. Chrome has the largest market share of users and when we develop features on our website that work in Chrome, its the other browsers that often don't work with the new feature so we were spending a lot more time trying to code work-arounds for the other browsers. So keep in mind that if you use other browsers, the sites you use may not look/feel as they were designed. ExplorOz for example is best used with Chrome. We recently had to disable support for Internet Explorer on our website - Microsoft have discontinued it, and no longer support it so there's no patches or security updates, but more specifically to us - it simply cannot support our "new" mapping engine, which we use to display EOTopo online and the map window in Places, and in Treks etc.

I've tried Bravo browser and DuckDuckGo for search (for a week) - but unfortunately, for me anyway, they are not a patch on Chrome browser, or Google Search.

Unfortunately, Google have "cornered the market", with their size and power, and their top-class search algorithms.

Also, Google Maps and Street View are invaluable and wide ranging, and beat anyone else, hands down - despite their errors, and despite the fact that in many country areas, Google have not updated their Street View since it was first carried out in 2008.

Regardless of their shortcomings, both are still way ahead of any other offerings. I don't like or trust Google, and I wish some other company could offer equivalent coverage and service - but it's just not happening at present.

Perhaps some start-up might be able to harness "people power", and utilise all the information that people give freely on their blogs, websites and forums, to combat Googles power and coverage - but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Cheers, Ron.

I agree 100% about Chrome. It is fast, slick, integrates beautifully with Google on- line products and facilities ,as it should of course. I keep it on my system for when I need it - eg accessing my club's Google Drive and Forms, etc. But for all my personal use I use Opera. It renders the EO site and everything in it perfectly.

I also use Opera for Android on my small devices and have looked at Opera Touch but haven't yet given it a real workout.

As Wicket has pointed out, I may only have swapped a western Big Brother for a Far Eastern one. I don't know which would be worse :-(

Well, I can see that Cat meme will be soon be picked up by Google bots as offensive to cats, and people with sensitive, caring natures - and Exploroz will again be financially penalised by the Great God Google.

It's become obvious to me, that Google needs to hand down 2 stone tablets to us mere mortals, with a full list of undesirable and hurtful words and pictures, so we can become more like the type of people Google is insisting we must become.

There's talk about the level of social control in China - but it's all too apparent that Corporate America does it bigger and better.

We aren't 100% reliant on advertising - we have multiple revenue streams - so there's also Membership, & Product sales (EOTopo, ExplorOz Traveller, Classifieds, & Shop) but it would be poor business judgement to accept a loss of thousands of dollars per month for the sake of keeping 1 joke post per week on the Forum!

Michelle, I think this was an inevitable decision. It’s a blessing that it was made by Google.

Joke threads can get out of hand very quickly. Boundaries are pushed and what one person finds funny another one will find offensive.

As an example, look at the proliferation of the F bomb and, even worse, the C bomb, on social media.

I think you will see more people return to the forum than leave.

Humour doesn’t have to offend our evolving social norms. Googles actions are only representative of these norms in this day and age. I have observed these changing norms in the workplace, in particular, over the last 50 years. Offensive humour can be hurtful, degrading and perpetuate disrespectful attitudes. The pub and campfire with a belly full of grog are probably two places were the offensive is considered humour and can’t be censored. Having said all this I have a friend who’s default behaviour is offensive, swears like a trooper but at home with his wife and kids it is the diametrically opposite. He is respectful, kind considerate and doesn’t swear. I expect most of the posters who have created a problem for Michelle and David are in the same category. Even I have to suppress a wry smile at many of the funnies that step over the line. Where to from here?

I was a long time member and purchased many dollars worth of product from the shop.

I dropped out primarily due to attending a National Gathering, winning a major prize from an advertiser only to be told, 'Oh, we aren't doing that trip this year'.

Now that wasn't funny. Now we can't even have a laugh due to censorship - and we just sit back and cop it.

We are happy to toss our principles out the window for a piece of silver.

As a relatively ad hoc user of this site I do routinely drop in to have look at the Friday Funnies.

I wonder whether this is a classic case of "cutting off your nose to spite your face". I agree that Google Ad words are a wonderful source of revenue for website owners. But if changing some of things that drew your users to the website in the first place means losing what made Exploroz great, then that could result in longer term outcomes which may not be desirable from a business perspective.

I do respect the right of a business to be adaptable and flexible to change and to implement difficult decisions if need be. However, for me personally this will make the site less attractive to view the musings and antics of the regular players. Potentially resulting in Exploroz not being at the forefront of my thinking when I am considering mapping software purchases, etc.

I think that too many website owners lose sight of the of the original objective for running the site in the first place. Ad words will never bring more eye balls to your site but changing your rules and adapting it to meet the rules of an algorithm, that lets face it can change at anytime, is stepping on thin ice in my opinion.

I hope that it turns out to be a great decision and that everything goes well for you in the future.

Regards,

Geoff

Now for the kicker. You can look up any perversion on google that is available worldwide, often you can put in some keywords that lead you to these sites and they now want to be the good guys..

This blows me away.

Banjo, the reason I stopped reading the “Friday funnies” is that I no longer enjoyed them. Yes, some were funny, but some were quite offensive.

As for some that have commented on this thread, I cannot understand why they a critical of the admins for trying to protect this forum from financial loss or possible litigation.

G’day Allan and Macca and any others that thought the funnies were too rough sometimes.
That’s your choice, but haven’t some things been deleted by moderation in the past? Not everyone is straight laced. And I certainly think some things shouldn’t be available to the public, but where do you draw the lines of censorship? That’s a hard call I reckon, I’ll leave that decision to someone else.
Cheers all

You think I'm "straight laced" Shane? You couldn't be more wrong.
But some things aren't funny, just crude.
Would you relate some of those funnies around the campfire in mixed company?

And by the way, correctly, it's "strait-laced".
Cheers

Allan,
You are correct about not repeating some in mixed company.
But if you’ve stopped reading Friday funnies because some of it is a bit rougher than you like, you are a bit strate laced!
And then you come on with the spelling/ grammar stuff as well???

I do like most of your comments and opinions in discussion on this forum, you are a valuable contributor.
As has bin said here befor the grammar and spelling isn’t that important as long as it is understandable! You understood what I was saying.
Cheers
Shane

Shane.

If you have the temerity to tell me that I am "straight laced" or whatever, then I feel justified to point out that you have used an incorrect word.

And anyway, what is so wrong about polite advice on using the wrong word...... I was not driving a stake through your heart. Had I posted some erroneous advice on vehicle mechanics I would get plenty of correcting responses. But offering advice on a word error and I commit some offence!

In any case, why your admonishment to Macca and myself? Look back at my original post where I said "I gave up visiting Friday Funnies long ago" without any reference to you or what others may do or post. Merely what I have chosen to do. But you see fit to lecture me? C'mon.

Cheers
Allan

Allan, sorry you felt I picked on you unjustifiably, looks to me like you’re having a bad day, and having a full on go at me.

:)

What is a straight laced person?
strait-laced. also straight-laced also straitlaced. adjective. If you describe someone as strait-laced, you disapprove of them because they have very strict views about what kind of behavior is moral or acceptable. [disapproval]

Macca, I wasn’t criticising the moderator’s, just meaning they do their job. I think you need to consider what I wrote.
It is 2020 and wether I condone it or not ( and some content on this forum,tv etc. is getting pretty bad in my opinion) it is common to hear the f and c bomb’s regular now days.
So it’s everyone’s choice what they watch or read isn’t it, we few won’t change the world.

Genny,
There are other dictionaries out there , not with the same opinion as Collins has. And I didn’t mean it as disapproving of anyone.

Click on it, takes you to the clear image. Basically it is one of those fake investment scams. You'd think a company that can diligently scan for "offensive" content could also ban scam advertising.
Difference is of course, the scammers pay them money .....
