Free Camps

Hello - there would be hundreds of "free camps" (many undocumented) between Perth and Broome along many different routes - I doubt that they would all be "closed". Pretty sure all the 24 hr road stops would be open.

Free camps in the Shire of Irwin (Dongara) I believe are closed. Haven't heard about any others.

I'm wondering if that was when the camp grounds were closed due to Covid19, if so, they're now re-opened. I'm hoping so myself as we're heading up that way next month, planning on camping at the Murchison Bridge and also at Manilya, our usual camping spots.

If you don't have it already, I suggest you get the Wikicamp app.

This app allows you to setup filters for what you are looking for (I set one for Telstra reception) and it will then only show those sites you want to see.

Dongara has a free camp at the oval just to the north of the town and last time I went past it was operating but might have been closed due to Corona virus.

I read yesterday that Irwin shire had done it to assist the van parks because they were suffering. Plus those nasty travellers who don't want to pay to stay haven't been spending any money in the towns they pass through....
So after spending 400K on setting them up with toilets etc. they have decided it's not good enough.
I wonder how many of those councillors have their grubby fingers in the caravan park pie?

A service at a cost Dunc. No one expects anything for free but I know we spend money at places we go through. Maybe not much at any one time but it all adds up.
Still, if they don't want us to pull up for a meal. fuel etc. I'm sure there's others will.

The "free camps" you refer to along the highways would be the 24hr Pbays provided by Main Roads... I just took a look on the main roads website using the option to show rest areas and I don't see any statements that any are closed? But check it out yourself in more detail here - Main Roads WA map

I wouldn't want to sleep over night at any of them anyway. The actual "free" camps that you can find along the way, a little off the highway would be council provided in nature reserves. There's a few good ones we've been too and these are documented in ExplorOz Places and therefore available in our ExplorOz Traveller app if you've got that. It's impossible in this rapidly changing COVID situation to keep up and publish a definitive guide so best just to follow your nose and the grapevine. Pop a note into any places to keep everyone informed though if you discover something worth alerting others to. Enjoy your getaway lucky bugger ;)
