I realise with Covid, there might not be too many travellers around at present but I am hoping to do a run through this way to the Corner Country in about 6 weeks. Just wondering about road conditions in general. I will be checking with Wanaaring General Store closer to the time but thought I'd ask here as well. Hope to get to Noccundra, Thargomindah, Hungerford and back to Bourke as well in my quick trip. Only me and my 2013 Mazda BT-50 with canopy. Cheers.

Did Tibooburra to Wanaaring a few years back...it’s a good wide dirt road we easily sat on 100kph as we towed our camper trailers (mate towed a hybrid). The road was boring as bat poo scenery wise though, scrub lining either side of it gives little to look at, mate said the same thing and we actually had to pull up 30 minutes from Wanaaring to stretch our legs because we were so bored with the drive. The other side of Tibooburra to Cameron Corner via Sturt National Zpark is a really nice drive though, but very stoney in some areas and would sort out any average tyres quickly.

I got caught on that road in the rain, 20-30km/h crabbing sideways with front wheels in one lot of ruts and rear wheels in another for about 20km, at which point I'd get it straight for a few hundred meters or get tram lined into the ruts to go through a gate way, only to have it slide and crab along on the opposite lock for the next 10-20km.

A very long, slow 5-6 hr trip into Tibooburra, where we were then stuck for 5 days. And I wasn't towing.

If it looks like rain, then I'd have a really good think about it. Its tar most of the way from Broken Hill to Tibooburra, so at least there is an escape route now.

Thanks for that. Will definitely be checking the weather as I go. Btw, apparently Tib. to Broken Hill recently finished and fully paved. For your interest.

Yes about 15 years ago did Wannaring to Bouke in the rain.
We later found that the cops closed the road just after we left.
I had a Detroit locker in the back and drove most of the way looking out the drivers side window as the back ran down the slope. And that was a Range Rover with constant AWD
2 of our group of 10 speared off the road into full drains as they had forgotten that they had lock on when the front wheels suddenly grabbed out of ruts.
Funnily enough a Mazda 626 Fwd slotted into our group and made it to Bourke.

2017. We found the drive from Tibooburra through to Wanaaring fairly 'exciting' although not someting we'd choose to repeat...... we got caught in a fairly full on dust storm. Temperatures were in the low 40's. We pulled up & shut off the motor to let the worst of it pass. With windows wound up to keep the dust out it was like being in a sauna looking out at hell. Once on the move again we were driving on a 'moving road', or at least that's how it looked much of the time with dust still swirling around. We were heading to Bourke & then southward, but a couple of months earlier had been headed north & passed through Wanaaring toward Hungerford, Currawinya & on up to Eulo & Yowah, & whilst there had met a few locals, one of whom invited us to camp on his station alongside a long Paroo waterhole. Possibly one of the nicest camp spots we've had, it was so good to reach it a second time after that dust storm & share the water with the yellowbelly & Pelicans for a while!

At the Tibooburra end I recommend the Aboriginal Reserve camp ground, a rather nice setting just a kilometre or so out of town. Pay at the Land council building (house) in town near the servo.

Hi Stephen
Roads are OK. Typical gravel, some quick, some a bit slower. Currawinya NP on the Paroo River ( actually a branch of the Paroo) can be nice for birdlife if it hasn't been too dry. Hot showers available !!
Noccundra has a nice camp also, and a pub.

Love the corner country, but be prepared for dust and flies .
Cheers

Thanks for that. I'm prepared for the flies as I went to The Corner Oct. 2017, but came from Broken Hill. Will try to plan my trip for a squizz at Currawinya. Safe travelling to you. :)

Easy drive. Drove Innamincka to Noccundra, Hungerford, Wanaaring and down to Wilcannia a year or two ago. We towed a caravan - no troubles.

And please take some firewood to Noccundra waterhole. The area is completely denuded of even the smallest stick, people cut live trees down and try to burn them. It may not be too long before the local council shuts the camping area down!

The area has just had rain. One semi lost it on the Wanaaring Rd. I tried to get from the Macquarie Marshes to Brewarrina and had to turn back (was towing). A flat bed dropped its rear off the shoulder and couldn't get back up.
It's very slow in drying out, that cack-brown dirt.

Thanks for the info. I will be checking with Wanaaring General Store closer to time ( about 5 weeks) and hope it has stayed dry enough. Appreciate the update as I haven't actually driven along there. Cheers.
