Plenty of fuel at the pump, turns over okay but won’t start. The filter light is on and we’ve changed the fuel filter. Sub tank light is on when the switch is off.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery and see if that fixes the fault. Also
check the 10amp fuel cut off solenoid fuse at the panel near your drivers door on lower dash. Also could be a fault in the key for the security system, try your spare key if you have one. A security key is only on vehicles made after mid 2002. Michael

Tried disconnecting the battery. It’s a 2000 model. Can’t find a solenoid 10a fuse. Fuses seem okay. Thanks

A 2000 model i'm sure has a standard metal ignition key and no security fuel soleniod on the back of the injector pump, hence no fuse. Try the Patrol 4x4

Is the filter light normally ON? was it ON before changing filter? many people twist the wires at the exit of filter bowls and actually twist the wires together, which then full time indicates with a light. I don't know what light should be showing with the sub switch off, so can't comment.
Is there any white smoke exiting the exhaust when you crank it and try to start? if no, then the fuel pump may not be injecting. for some reason, ie, a start point. no pun.
If there is white smoke or some smoke it may be too cold and the heaters aren't working. If the heaters are not working and that is the problem, use a hair drier into the intake to provide HOT air as an alternative.
You say there is plenty of fuel AT the pump but is there plenty exiting the BLEED of the pump, quite a different thing!

There is a electrical connector that plugs into the back of the fuel pump - try pulling that out and plugging it back in again - fixed my similar problem when I had a Patrol.

Gaz, I think that 2000 model didn't have that solenoid and plug, It was part of the security system that came out in 2002.

Gaz , you may be correct, i thought my 1999 4.2Td didn't have it but maybe it was there to turn the engine off but not used in the earlier models as part of the security system. My 2003 definitely has it. Michael

Crack an injector line at the injector and see if there is any fuel getting to the injectors when you crank the motor.

Silly question but did you pump the manual pump on top of the fuel filter until it was hard? An air leak in the line will quickly let the fuel run back to the tank. Michael

When I owned a 3 litre patrol 2002model the motor would not start with the sub tank light on .There were problems with the earthing system from the motor to the chassis and body. All patrols did suffer from this earth problem. The fix was to fit a large earth strap from the gearbox to the chassis & body under the vehicles
Then remove and clean the existing earth from the battery to body and motor.
By disconecting the battery this should clear the sub tank light
then it would start .

Thanks for your replies everyone. Found a split in the filter outlet pipe creating air in the injector pump. Hit her with a bit of Aerostart and away she went.

Your first words were, "plenty of fuel at the pump" With air in the line there cannot have been sufficient fuel at the pump at all. A bit misleading to diagnose. It can't be both air and fuel!
NEVER USE AEROSTART. If it doesn't start it has a problem which should be found and rectified. THEN IT WILL START. People apparently don't value their big end bearings.
If you fixed the hose then bleed it and it will start. I have repaired large expensive diesels after someone used Aerostart. With Aerostart you have NO CONTROL over suddenly developed cylinder ignition pressures which can easily be 4 times greater than ever experienced normally. I used to have pictures of bearing metal squeezed out sideways from the conrods.
