Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on whether it would be better to fit new springs and shockies than to buy a lift kit if we want to increase the clearance in a Forrester (assuming we can't afford both)? Also, what brands people recommend for these. I have spoken to SubaXtreme and done a search on these topics but would still appreciate any views (I apologise in advance for my complete ignorance on these types of things!)
P.S. Just wanted to say - this is such a great site - thanks so much for everyone's amazing generosity with their knowledge and time!

Hi Rowena. Have you thought of selling the Suby and buying something you don't have to modify. Seems to me if your thinking of lifting a Forrester your doing things that the car was not designed for. Something like a Pathfinder/Challanger still have car like qualitys and are very capable offroad. Don't get me wrong the Forrester is a great car but not realy a 4X4.

Hi Rowena,

The Forrester is a very nice and capable vehicle, and this site is one of the very very best. Now I hope i don't get in trouble for doing this .....but if you check out

http://forums.overlander.com.au

a guy with the nic called Spurry Moses has a forrester which has just had a lift kit fitted by SubaXtreme. Maybe you can post your topic there too or email him directly. I'm sure he would have an opinion on this topic.

By the way, I will say it again....this is a great site with a very informative feedback on questions posted.

There ....I think I have done enough sucking... seeing that I have also recommended another site.

Regards Tommyruff

We all have our preferences/bias - ours is Subaru's. Helpful advice, not criticism is what people are seeking on THIS forum. Take a look at the state Subaru web sites, and you will realize how extremely capable Subaru's are. Qld. http://www.subaclub.com/ - NSW. http://users.bigpond.net.au/subiclub/ - WA. http://home.off-road.com/~subaru.wa/ - SA. http://www.subaru4wd.asn.au/simpson.html - Vic. http://www.subaru4wdvic.com.au/active.html - One of the greatest pleasures of owning a Subaru is seeing the look on the faces of 'real' 4WD owners (eyes popping, jaws dropped!), when you arrive at a destination regarded as challenging, fresh and relaxed after a comfortable drive!

Not baggin anything. Just saying if its worth looking at other alternatives.

Ive looked at their sites before.. Wouldnt own one, not my thing.

I always turn up fresh and relaxed in my GQ Ti... Never seen many Scoobys doing the Deep Creek tracks... or Rankins, or Sunset, or gentle Annie... or.....

Still havent heard how much the Subxtreme thing is.

Truckster - SubaXtreme is currently developing new lift kits which will be between $600-$800, the springs they sell are (from memory) around $300 (plus $200 for fitting).
As you say - to each his own. We aren't doing anything as challenging as the tracks you are talking about ... but maybe one day :-)

The forester will outperform the 100 series and patrol in sand and get alot of places that will surprise people. Give it a lift - and - look out.

Rowena,

I personally know Spurry Moses that they refer to. He has had the SubaXtreme treatment to his Forester and is very happy.

I've seen it in action and its a very capable vehicle. If thats your thing, go for it.

Thanks everyone for your input. We are very happy with the Forester and think we will go with the suspension upgrade rather than a lift kit (just for a bit of extra clearance) since we are not planning on doing "serious" 4WDing.
A number of people have been really helpful in giving useful advice for the Forester and it seems to stand up well as long as you know the limitations.

6 years ago I towed and off-road trailer and crossed the Tanami to Halls Creek and the Kimberly. Grader hadn't been through yet and the roads were crook. Had to turn north at the border because the rest was flooded. We went up the Bucanan hwy through Ladjamanu and Kalkaringi. What a trip. Met a Pommy who had won the Pools on the way. He was driving a bus with a tandem trailer behind. On the trailer was a helecopter! Anyway..... I loved Subes. This one I drove on that trip was a 1982, 1800 hi/lo with no mods. She did very well. Sube drivers can take them almost anywhere. Yep..... that was some time ago. We've go two landcruisers and a Surf Hilux. Son has two landcruisers. Daughter drives a Corolla Seka.Lots of Toyotas! I had 5 subies over the years and miss 'em. Not enough to give up the Toyos though. Cheers Royce
