Hi All
Hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful christmas and best wishes for the new year.
I am after some information in regards to the best way to accommodate a family of four (kids being 1.5yr and 3yrs) for a long trip (about 10 weeks). We are planning to go across the top end from
Perth to
Cairns along
Savannah Way. We were thinking a tent as the budget wont stretch to a camper trailer yet. But is it to much hassle with small kids to set this all up every night? Would we be better off waiting another year and saving for a camper trailer and if so, what sort would be the best?
Thanks for any help
Jan :-)

Jan, Setting up a tent and the bedding each night and packing it up each morning can become tiresome, however plenty of people have done it before so if you are aware of all thats involved and are prepared to do it, thn go ahead. You will enjoy
camping in a place for several nights to be restful.
Have you considered hiring a camper trailer for that period.

Jan, we took our kids round Oz twice using tents. They take time to get up and down, and a couple of times we slept in the car. We also had a motel where availiable, around every 4 or 5 days, just to remain civilized.
The kids are all grown up now, and both of them love to travel...but not with tents :))

Hi Jan,
When it was just the wife and me, we only owned a tent - putting it up every night didn't seem to be such a hassle at all.
Once we had 2 kids, I bought a camper van so we could get away
camping again as a family (was only boys trips in between). Tenting and 2 very
young kids seemed too hard and
camping is supposed to be fun (maybe we were simply too soft!). So we had an offroad van for ~4 years and it was great.
But the problem being i started to take this "off-road" van
places it was simply too big and ended up having to re-skin both sides . As the kids were now older, I sold the van and went back to tenting.
But I think the van really did make me too soft and I have found tenting not the same (ie. not as enjoyable and just too hard) and have decided to buy a camper trailer.
So, in my experience I personally would save a bit harder and get a camper trailer. The last thing you want to do is make things too hard and thus give up on
camping totally. But many, many people have done it and enjoyed it so it really is up to the individual. Best thing to do is go away for 5 or so days (moving on every day) and I am sure you will soon know the answer by then!!!
Cheers
Captain
