BTW - ran into a group of 4WD'ers in the Alice a couple of years back - just in off the Hay river trip after the Simpson - about 3 vehicles.... one was petrol and was festooned with jerries on the roof - and the adults were all blokes, WITH their kids (some quite little) - left the ladies home to go shopping ! They reported that they'd had a great time out there and were very impressed with Lindsay's show. Not been there myself.............

Hi JB,
John has provided you with a good link there...
We have done the Hay River a couple of times, when little in the way of tracks to follow existed.
I'ts not a hard trip, but due to it's remotness you do have to be well prepared.
It's a great trip and worth pursuing.
The second time we did it we tagged the Hay River onto the Madigan Line and did that as one trip.

hey awest,
happy new year ,
yes myself an some friends travelled the hay river trk in june 08 ,
it was a good trip . different to the simpson in so much that you drive along the top of a lot a dunes and then slide over the fresh sand drift on top of the dunes and a steep down side ,(going north ). I had a petrol GQ and had to carry fuel for 700ks to get me to Jervois .you will enjoy it ,go out to Lake Caroline for a look .
what anoid our group was the cost of the permit to go though Battern Hill . 120 $ per vehicle including motor bikes . and more if you camp there .
all in all pretty easy trip
mechpete.
should not have to pay to travel through our tax payer funded country

JB,

We did the trip last July from Poeppel to Batton Hill and all I can say is “What an excellent trip”. I filled at Mungerannie and with 3 Jerry Cans, made it back to Alice in the Patrol, but some members had to fill at Jervois.

Definitely a trip worth doing and the facilities at Batton Hill are excellent. Some very remote locations and only saw one group traveling south that passed us. Also worth doing Lindsie's Bush Tucker Tour and visit Goyders. I would love to do it again sometime.
A few Pics of our trip HERE

All the best,
Chaz

Hi, we did the trip last August (08) and thoroughly enjoyed it. We travelled north to south, feeling that we would have less weight on board when it came to crossing the dunes nearer Poepels, however it did give us the tougher side for the dune crossings. All but 2 were easy. Also went along the Madigan out to Markers 14 and 13. We took a lot of extra fuel to enable us to do these parts of the Madigan and would certainly advise same again. Took 4 hours to travel 33kms!! We didn't camp at Baton Hill, but paid our fees etc, as it was so windy and dust was flying everywhere. The sand is extremely soft in the Hay River and would advise serious thought be given to drive out along the River to Lake Caroline. At that time the flowers were spectacular and travelling north to south gave us such a wonderful sight. A most beautiful part of our wonderful outback. Only tricky thing I remember was identifying the track where camp 15 and the hay river track meet. Came upon groups who also had that problem, but hey, just means a few kms along the Madigan before you work it out. Enjoy and take plenty of warm bedding.
Couldn't ask for any better!
