Santa brought me an I-Phone. It's very nice but.....

I'm trying to set it up to use it as a modem attached to my laptop. Apple call it Internet Tethering.. !! W@nkers.

First of all I had to download an updated version of its software, now I have to negotiate with the appalling Telstra robot lady. Mention internet and you're off to Bigpond.

Of course, it's January 1st and the I-Phone help people are all sleeping it off.

Very frustrating.

With my now deceased Motorola V9 I just loaded the Motorola software off the included disc and connection was a couple of clicks.

Why does Apple have to be so Up itself??

I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy

Once you are up to the latest iphone OS version it will be very simple. The whirlpool iphone forum is a good place for support if you need it.
It is quite cool once working - just plug it in and you are connected!

In a moment of madness my wife tossed her blackberry out the landcruiser window. Unfortunately it hit the concrete footpath and we consigned to cyber heaven.

Regretting her moment of impulse, she headed to the telstra shop only to descover that the I phone is made for prius driving, latte drinking, public servants that work in the CBD. It has no socket for connecting a extension long range antenna. In addition it has a "A" antenna, designed for the city as well.

All in all not suitable for grey nomad travel. Now a new one is out, so this might have changed and the fat guy in the red suit, might have given you a new one.

She is back to a blackberry and I just sit in the drivers seat, jealous of both of you.

The latest Iphone 3GS has GPS as well as AGPS it also is compatible with a

CARCOMM cradle with an inductive connection to my RFI multiband aerial I used on my 6120.

Dont let Telstra tell you It cant or doesnt cos Ive got one and it does and can.

It also has spoken voice commands that the older ones dont

I dont use mine as a modem but my boy does sometimes so I could ask him if required

Crikey, How things change in the last few months.

My friend has the new blackberry as well. As my wife is now a wizz on everything that opens and shuts on it, so he asked her how she got to know so much.

Easy, just sit in the passenger seat and be driven all around the country with nothing to do but make tea and play with it.

Yep easy as go to the settings as per above

Settings/general/network/Internet tethering.

Change it to ON plug the USB cable in and wait till it says its ready to use

I did that and pulled my usual modem out and waited for a minute then opened IE and away we went.

I have a Iphone 3GS 32gig.

As I said you can also have voice control Like say "CALL BILL"

If the name is in your contacts and has home and mobile numbers it will say "Mobile or Home"

so you just say which you want Great eh but only on the 3GS

Cheers

OK, The tethering function only works depending on your provider, Telstra do not support tethering so you need a simple little app called PDA Net. To install PDA net you need to Jailbreak your Iphone which is really easy see as follows:

1. www.blackra1n.com (The letter I is the numeric 1 (One)
(Just click on windows and hit begin button)

2. After Blackra1n jailbreak is complete install Cydia from Blackra1n logo on Iphone.

3. Clcik on Cydia from within Ihone once installed and search apps PDA Net and install.

You will also need to install PDA net on PC see http://www.junefabrics.com/iphone/index.php

Hope this doesn't sound difficult and jailbreak is a good option IMO because it opens the Iphone up to some cool apps and does not effect your Iphone in any other way, you can still use Itunes etc , anyway thats my advise until Telstra decide to allow tethering , other providers were charging when I last checked. I use PDA net and it is awesome, with Iphone on Next G

Telstra does support tethering, it's all there on the big T's website.

When I turn on the tethering the phone wants me to call 125111, or go to the Telstra website to finalise the procedure.

I'll wait til next week.

cheers

Ok have just disconnected my USB modem and plugged my Iphone in and tried to connect to the net NO GO

Went to settings and enabled tethering and was on in 15secs and am typing this and posting it via the Iphone as a modem

Maybe the shop set mine up when I got it from them but it obviously works without any third party apps.

Cheers

Howdy All

I have the latest Iphone and it tethers fine. HOWEVER! Keep an eye on your data usage. I managed to chew through a $80 data plan in about 40 mins of browsing.

Otherwise..........love the thing.

Hullo Craig,

I've actually disabled "Safari" in the hope that I now can't accidentally get on the net without knowing.

When I'm travelling I use a 5gb Data Pack. That's heaps.

Success....

but it required the intervention of a Telstra employee, in the Phillipines no less.

Where my I-Phone screen used to say "Set up Internet Tethering", it now says "Turn On Internet Tethering".

cheers, thanks, especially for that 1800 number, anything to avoid the Telstra Robot Lady.

Now save up for a RFI aerial and a Carcomm cradle because Iphones are definitely NOT country style phones.

My old 6120 has far better reception than the Iphone but its OK in the cradle

Get a Cradle here for $129 It is the only one with the aerial connector.

http://www.ow.com.au/shop/iPhone-Car-Accessories-Car-kit-holders/Carcomm-Apple-iPhone-3G-In-Car-Mobile-Phone-Cradle

Postage is $10.

It has a short cable that matches up with the fitting on a RFI aerial.
