Hilux or Nivara? Any problems with respective diesels?

All common rail diesels can have problems mainly due to poor quality fuels, very expensive injectors and pumps. Also the EGR system sends a percentage of dirty exhaust gas back into the engine which often over a period of between 70,000 and 150,000km blocks the inlet manifold. This can also make the oil dirty between
services and stop the under piston oil squirters from working (ask me how I know) When they rebuilt my engine @ 153,000km, the manifold was 95% blocked.

You might like to wait till the Navarra 550 is released. It has a new gen V6 diesel available, 7 speed Auto. Engine designed by Renault.
Not a Nissan owner,
mine is a triton 3.2 CRD, love it, if they were still using the 3.2 instead of the new 2.5 I'd buy another one.

Going by the trouble with Mack trucks when they introduced Renault motors thats hardly a recomendation. But you are right about the 3.2 good motor.

Plenty bof discussion about this on the patrol
forum, they seem to have decided that it is a Nissan Design, passed off to Renault as part of a design/manufacture deal with em.

Only one problem with the Navara 550 IMHO.....the starting price is $75000 and that is about $25000 more than my diesel D40 with a bunch of aftermarket equipment on it. Out of my price range I'm afraid.

Yes sorry Mark...I was talking about the auto version with I've been told by the dealer will come in around the $75K......Don't know for sure but this price might also include luxury car tax which I believe (could be wrong though) starts at around the $60K mark.

I looked at both of these for some time. Half a dozen of 1 and 6 of the other in my mind. I got the duel cab hilux because of the extra room in the back
seat. As I travel with people in the back
seat often, it became a factor for me.

The Hilux is bigger in all areas, the back
seat and volume in general is noticeable. The Hilux is dearer however the biggest selling vehicle going around at the moment. Take both for a
test drive both are great products.

Really???? I think you must be talking about the D22 Navara if you think the Hilux is bigger.....my D40 Navara dual cab is much much bigger in all aspects....payload capacity, towing capacity, footprint and space in the cabin area.

seat, if you think your D40 is bigger then give me the proof. Every review done on these vehicles has the Hilux as roomier in the cabin. Not interested in debating this as the buyer can make his own mind up. Hilux outsells the D40 by about a factor of 10's and maybe more, perhaps the buyers are onto something?

Bit touchy aren't we? Happy to stand the D40 alongside any 'lux....not saying the D40 is any better and I certainly didn't say it outsells the 'lux either...just stating the facts. Don't know where you got your reviews from just go to the Toyota site and then the Nissan site and compare. IMHO if the miners and other big companies purchases of Hilux were deducted from the overall number ...along with my rellies in QLD...reckon that the Nissan sales would be on a par at least but frankly couldn't give a damn.

Heres some facts for comparison when it comes to interior volume and payload Hilux vs D40. Worth putting up for review given your comments.
Hilux:

Total payload is almost 20% bigger in favour of the Hilux. My comments first time around simply stated Hilux was bigger volume wise and sold more numbers, both are correct. I will make no comment on the safety ratings but given these vehicles are similar in price the above is extremely relevant to the poster's question.

Yep agree but really the only things the 'lux has "bigger" is the payload and height - and price.

The other thing to think aboutis which company will treat you better when something goes wrong. The other problem with Naravas is they now come with DPF s which are a pain. Two of ours just cost $4000 ea because low ash oil was not used at service.

Somebody didn't read the handbook then I'm guessing Madfisher - like all vehicles the book clearly states which oils to use......and to quote an old Aussie actor....Oils ain't oils sol!

Well the mechanic reckons he asked for the correct oil at the retailer for that model and they gave him the wrong oil. But you are right its his responsibity to put the right oil in.

They are both good vehicles, the Navara probably represents the best "bang for your buck" though.
I notice that it has been mis-spelt 3 times in this thread, if you are trying to do a Google search try "Navara".

...and remember folks that there are two distinctly different Navara models - the D22 which is around the same size as the Hilux, Triton, BT50,
Ranger etc....and the D40 which is quite a bit bigger.....and of course more expensive. But still it is around $10K cheaper than the 'lux and you can buy a lot of aftermarket stuff for that.

The biggest difference as I see it is that the Navaras tow rating is 3 tonne and the HiLux is about 2.25tonne.
That's why you dont see to many HiLux's towing caravans of any size.
I have an 07 Navara D40 and so far so good- tows our 2.5tonne van with ease.

I have a D40 Navara that I bought new in Dec 2008 - now has nearly 60000km on the clock and no problems at all. It has spent a substantial amount of time off the bitumen, crossed the Simpson, into the high country, done the Gary and Gunbarrel etc......IMHO great value for money.
That said, I do know that a number of people appear to have been badly treated by their dealer and Nissan - no such problems in my case and the dealer in
Canberra has been excellent.

I have a D22 3liter Navara it has covered 275,000 km and has a little unreliable as i
have had to replace the syncro on 2nd gear(warranty) the battery and the fan belt and tension er pulley.
Next time I would buy a Toyota as I have not heard of one that ever broke down or wore out.
