I have a 200 series and Im having a litte trouble choosing what tyre to go we will be mostly touring and doing what the A/T suggests but alot of people and 4wd shows suggest the M/T are the way to go these days so confused !!!
Really dont want a noisy tyre yet some people are saying these km2's are quiet?
Were looking at doing the flinders rangers this year then red centre next year and so on after, we do a fair few trips to the high country every year any ideas

I take my BFGAT when touring and leave my MT's at home , because BFGAT is best performing tyre on outback dirt /stony dirt roads , and thats where the accidents happen !

Thanks for the reply thats the way im kinda heading just a little worried about side wall protection but i guess you cant have the best of both in one tyre i have read that the high country can be murder in the AT's have you had any time with yours up there

THe HC is where I prefer my MT's , over Xmas I took both my 4800 Patrols for a camp up there looking for tough tracks , one had MT one had BFGAT , both performed well as it wasn't to slushy , but when I take the BFGAT I always take chains which then make them better than the MTs.

I actually have two sets of BFGAT one from 2002 , they have survived large amounts of off road touring but have now gone hard and I only ever had one sidewall puncture in them that I can remember.


Always good to take a good plug kit though.

Have a look at the Goodyear MTR for an off road tyre, have had on both my Patrols and will not buy anything else now. Not very noisy on the black top but on all types of dirt or gravel they are unbelievable good. The sidewalls are reinforced and have block tread on them to prevent sidewall punchers and aide traction. Three of the people that I travel regularly to the outback and Flinders Rangers ETC, have changed to MTR from Coopers or BF Goodrich MT's.
Good luck with the decision as tyers and suspension types will always get a different view from lots of people. John C

Yep Goodyear MTR's are great, I've done about 15,000 kms on mine. I have a set I keep for extreme desert travel because of puncture resistance. The down side is the rubber is soft and I can't see myself getting 50,000 kms.

I also have a set of BFG MT’s, I use these for regular driving and touring 4Wd trips. Yes they are quiet, I reckon quieter the BFG ATs that I have been buying for the last 15 years.

If your mainly doing tourng go BFG AT's, you wont be sorry

Another vote here for the goodyear MTR's.
Had two sets both gone through the simpson and not a drama.
They are a bit softer in the rubber hence won't get the km out of them but a fantastic tyre.

are we talking the new MTRs or the old ones?

they are an extremely different tyre

the new MTRs are far more aggresive - are lot noisier and are more prone to uneven wear due to the blockier nature of their tread

I am talking about the current version Goodyear MTRs with very open and aggressive tread.

Can't comment on old version - I've never used them.

I had the old version on my GQ then a set on my QU. Have just put new version on QU and put old version on Camper they are only about half worn and will go back on the patrol after trip later this year. Have got 50.000k out of set on GQ but by then they were out of shape a little and only good for spare camper wheels. will give the new version a test soon and see how they go. John c

If you are going touring as we did I would suggest the BFG AT

We did 50,000k on various surfaces but not much an rough tracks.

Up till now we havent even had 1 puncture.

Good enough for me.

I had BFG AT's and they are a good tyre, the only problem I had was excessive chipping.
Now I run BFG MT KM2's and they are much better in that respect, they are a bit more noisy than the AT's but far less than the Mickey Thomsons MT's I had before.
In the end it is all a compromise.

MT KM2 all the way. Have 6 on my dually for the load rating, run them at 70psi and they are more quiet than anything I had before.
I paid $180 + $75 from the US per tire 255/85 16 .. tires were delivered within 7 days of order.

Agree with Robin on this one - BFG AT are the best touring tyre available IMHO. Long lasting, good grip (in bigger vehicles), strong carcass, low noise and excellent manners in the dirt.

Not the best 4WD tyre, although not poor either, but as an All Terrain (all purpose compromise) they are very good.

I have the BFG TA's 285/70R17 on my 200 and am very happy with it. I have done ~50,000kms with them and wouldn't hesitate to go that way again. While muddies may ultimately give better mud performance, unfortunately that accounts for less than 0.1% of my driving. Gravel roads, beaches and the dreaded tar are my typical road surfaces so a far better and more practical choice for me.

For the High Country in Vic, you would be thankfull for tyres like the KM2s, They do hum a bit on the black top but not what you would call noisy.

Even with M/T tyres I still carry chains when going down through the High Country.

You might be struggling to get any BFGs at all, be they A/T or M/T, they seem to be as rare as at the moment. I just changed my M/Ts (old style) to the KM2 after getting 87,000kms out of them.

The old ones still have some tread left and will be going onto the camper trailer. Two trips through the east Pilbara (Rudall River) and not a single puncture, mind you they were getting a bit noisy.

I run BFG ATs on my 150 Prado, they have done 50K and have plenty left.
They have done GRR and plenty of other dirt roads towing van with no trouble and are quiet on road.
My other vehicle has Cooper STs which are noisier on road but far superior in the mud. I can recomend both for touring, got 85k out of last set of Coopers. BFG AT better on road. Incorrect preasures kill any tyres on stones and ensure you specify LT in any tyre.Just my opinion for what it is worth.

BFG A/T would be the way to go for all around use.....theyre a bit half way between ie... Mud tyres for mud.... Smooth tyres for sand ..... Sure you may get a bit of chipping in the stoney areas but that's a small price to pay for such a durable all around tyre.
