Wildflower, Photos....Quandongs - Update.

Hi All

Back in February of this year, I put up a story of this unique Australian Plant. As the trees are only less than a fifteen minute drive from Clare, I decided to check up on the progress and how many of the flowers had developed into fruit for this coming season. I can report that the trees are loaded, but still have a long way to go.

Most of the fruit is around 5mm in size, while a few are not quite 1cm.

I will put up a Blog so I can add to the images as they go their full cycle and develop into ripe fruit. Fiona is now searching the internet for recipes for when they are ready to cook up.

Hi Stephen,
I look forward to your blog.
I bought some quandong jam along the highway south of Pt Augusta and the young man serving me said it was very time consuming to make (hence the higher price). I must say I was not impressed with the jam - too runny. Will be interested to see what Fiona comes up with.

Hi Min

Fiona is stepping into whole new grounds here, so it will be very interesting to see how she goes. One of the new girls from work is from Port Augusta and when I told her about the Quandongs, she wanted to know where they are, as she said her grandma made the best Quandoung Pie and she wanted to get some to make one herself...yum sounds very nice.

It will be interesting to she how the fruit continues to grow and ripen.

Thanks for the update & the great pictures. Mind you I reckon you should advise Fiona to add about 5 or 6 Kilos of sugar to any recipe she comes across LOL!!

Where the trees are is on the side of the road, but there are hundreds of the trees in the stretch of road that I visit, so there is lots of fruit for everyone, including wildlife. Judging by the pitted stones that we found in the area, most of the fruit ends up on the ground, there is just that much of it.

You might have started something here - maybe the great EO Quandong pie bake-up / jam boil-up. I've made a fair bit of jam over the years but never tried quandong - something to do with not many of them over here.

We were only talking about it this morning and made the comment that we will have to collect a lot of Quandongs when they are ripe. As you know, there is very little fruit on them and they seem to be all stone.

Anyone for some pitted stones for Chinese Checkers around late September....LOL
