French Line- Madigan Line- Simpson Desert

Our group met up at the Birdsville races 2nd September 2012. Left Birdsville for the Frenchline. The vehicles were a Nissan Patrol 4.2 turbo, a 200 series , an 80 , a Toyota tray, a 78 troopy and a Suzuki sierra. It was a trouble free crossing except for one puncture and clutch trouble with the Suzuki. All vehicles acqutted themselves very well. The track was in a terrible state and all dunes were severly rutted. At Dalhousie the Suzuki left us as the owner was not confident of completeting the Madigan Line. Refuelled at Mt Dare and met the rest of the party at Old Andado. Left Old Andado on the 8th September for the Madigan Line. The group now consisted of the Patrol, the 200, 3 80s,the turbo 4.2 troopy, a V8 70 series tray and a stardard Toyota tray and 18 people. For the Madigan Line I used the "outback Travellers Track Guide #5 North Simpson Desert. This book is a great source of information and generally correct in detail.

It was a successful crossing of the Madigan visiting all Camps except 3,4,5,23 and 24. The group suffered 6 blowouts and upto 20 punctures. No mechanical issues except a broken leaf in the tray Toyota. The track generally is hard to follow and exceptionally rough especially the sand moguls. An excellent trip but one not to be unprepared for. When planning this trip, weight is your enemy. Fuel usage was:- turbo 4.2s 165lts, 200 series 190, petrol 80 190 lts. Our trip was west to east and I would not attempt east to west, the dunes are too steep on the east side. Excellent trip for not so faint hearted and I have kept pretty good notes if anyone needs specifics in relation any part.
