Mudgee to Darwin Day 44 plus some more, a dash to Darwin, tablelands highway and Barkly Homestead

We spent Friday and Saturday driving to Darwin and back, picking up new heavier duty springs, and 4 new tyres. We were both pretty shattered by the time we made it back to Borroloola. On Sunday Peter swapped the best two tyres off the hilux onto the camper, I did some housework, and we had a quiet afternoon.

Monday morning the flatbed arrived early to collect the hilux, we spent the morning packing up to be ready to go as soon as the hilux was ready. We left Borroloola about 12.30, stopped briefly at Cape Crawford to check bolts and fastenings and have lunch, then headed south on the tablelands highway for Barkly Homestead. The road, though tarred, is only a single lane, and has many dips, ruts, and even corrugations - so we took it fairly cautiously, and were still going at sunset. There were many suicidal cattle to avoid, as well as occasional oncoming traffic, and even a couple of cars who overtook us. The last 40km to Barkly were very slow and careful. We were relieved to make it in by about 7pm, fuelled up and set up for an overnight camp.

We're back on the road this morning, heading east for Camooweal, Mt Isa and onwards.
