Crushed water tanks, a ripped off trailer door, trapped in a gorge and firmly stuck in a deep waterhole – that’s not camping Barry…that’s an Odyssey!

Mission –

avoid tourists, grey nomads and the bitumen wherever possible. Find hidden waterholes, gorges and nasty tracks!

Timeframe –

six, er..seven…er eight weeks or whenever we get back to work.

Plan –

using a secret mudmap explore lost towns and hidden Pilbara gems such as Gregory Gorge, Red Dog, Coppins and Doolena Gaps, the Corunna Secret WW2 airbase, Carrawine, Running Waters, Skull Springs, Rudall River, Weeli Wolli, Eagle Rock, Wanna Munna, Punda Rockhole, Kalgans, Yampire, Wittenoom and Hamersely Gorges, Juna Downs – Coppin and Bobswim and maybe Biluin on the way home.

These places cannot be Googled. People jealously guard their locations and sneakily do not divulge the GPS locations.

Oh, and Cape Leveque was the ‘had to go to’ place. We broke down last year only 200 kilometres from there so we were intent on rectifying that mishap that this trip.

Comment – the military say that the best plan only survives the first contact with the enemy.

What happened –

two out-of-season tropical depressions - about 600 combined millimetres of rain, flooding, frustrated by the government, miners and pastoralists blocking access, trapped by fences and pipelines…but some incredible characters, amazing country and memories of a lifetime…
