Central Australia Adventure June 2012, Day one16/06/12

We headed off this morning at 0500hrs, everybody pretty excited but a little sleepy.

We just managed to fit into the car, it's amazing how all the little last minute additions take up that precious little space you have left after much careful planning.

First stop Toowoomba Macca's, our family tradition is to start every holiday with Macca's, not very healthy but a nice way to start the day.

Pretty uneventfull drive as far as Miles then a lot of road works on and off all the way to Roma, I can see why they need it though, the road is like a roller coaster.

Lunch at a road side stop in Muckadilla, simple little stop with the smallest kid's playground I have ever seen, there is one picnic table, a toilet, and a bridge that crosses a non existent creek.

Next stop for an overnight stay, Augathella, at the Augathella Motel and caravan park. A very basic caravan park to say the least, lots of gravel, sites difficult to figure out and a view of trucks and the road. On the bright side the toilets and showers are clean and the pub isn't too far away. Don't know if it's worth the $27.00, we probably would have been better off staying at one of the free camps in the area.

Easy dinner tonight, a little stir fry, a beer or two and some wine, and an early night for weary travelers.

Car and trailer went well, although I would like to go to a weigh bridge and see how much they weigh, I reckon it's pretty close to max.

Fuel economy was good on the first leg, 11.5 liters/100k, not much traffic so I was able to sit at a comfortable 90kph and not annoy to many other road users, after a fuel top up I sped up to 105kph and saw the needle plummet at a great rate of knots.

I think it's well worth keeping the speed down, especially on a long trip, it would save a considerable amount of money in fuel, and is a lot safer.

Only issue with the trailer is maybe a very slow leak on one tyre, I must keep an eye on that.

As you can see Augathella CP is a busy place.

Tomorrow we head off to Longreach.

Cheers
