Darwin Via the Gulf June/July 2013 Day 1127/06/13

After a nice night at Borroloola we headed off toward Butterfly Springs via Ryans Bend road, heading out of town about 25 kilometres, Ryans Bend road is on the right , this way to Butterfly Springs is 100 or so kilometers shorter than going via Cape Crawford.

The 53 kilometres all the way to the T intersection where you turn right onto Nathan River rd towards the Limmen NP is great, it was mostly smooth with some patches of mild corrugations.

Once you turn right towards NP the road all the way to Butterfly Springs is not so good, it has some very rocky stretches and corrugations with large rocks mixed in, they seem to sneak up on you so you really need to keep the speed down, there are some minor creek crossings along the way with one that looks like a muddy puddle, it was actually a bit deep and had a soft bottom unlike the rest which had rocky bottoms, we did speak to some travellers who got stuck in it because they underestimated it and went a little slow.

Anyway it wasn't too bad and worth a little discomfort to get to Butterfly Spings.

On the way we stopped at The Southern Lost City, its only 4kl off the main rd and definitely worth a visit, after lunch we did the circuit walk around the city which took about an hour.

Getting back on the road we travelled another 45min or so and arrived at Butterfly Springs around 3pm, I must say I expected the place to be a little crowded by that time of day but it was pleasantly quite, and by evening maybe only five other groups had joined us.

The camp ground which costs $7.50 per family per night (honesty box) is very basic, drop toilets, some fire pits, no rubbish bins or water taps.

The Lagoon was really nice, a bit of an oasis really, the waterfall was even flowing.

After setting up camp we all had a dip in the lagoon which was cool but very refreshing after travelling in all that dust.

Tomorrow we head of to Roper Bar, the last leg of dirt except for some side trips, that we will do this trip.
