Darwin Via the Gulf June/July 2013 Day 1428/06/13
Well 0700hrs and we are packed up,waiting for the tow truck to take the car, camper trailer and us to Katherine where the car is booked in for repair.
George from Roper Bar Transport arrives and puts the car on the tray truck and hooks up the trailer to tow behind, George tells us that there is a big party in Mataranka tonight and if we had broken down the next day we wouldn't have been so lucky getting a tow in the morning.
The trip into Katherine only took an hour and a half, and we pulled into Crowhurst Engineering about 0830, saying goodbye to George I explained to the workshop manager what had happened to the car.
On inspection we were told that the repair would be fairly straight forward and it should only take a couple of hours, the bloke there explained and showed me that the end fitting on the high pressure hose of the power steering had not been crimped on correctly leading to the failure.
In the end the job took a little longer as they ran into a hitch along the way but we were still ready to go by 1230, while we waited we had a look around Katherine, not really much to see, but there was a Maccas !
The guys at Crowhurst Engineering at Katherine were great, and did an excellent job at a pretty good price, would definitely recommend them if you need repairs.
RACQ were also great, they were helpful and prompt and everything sorted out in no time, its definitely worth having the Ultimate cover while in the outback, with the roadside callout and the tow to Katherine not costing us anything.
Soon as we were done we headed off for Howard Springs, a short distance south of Darwin where we would be staying for the next 4 nights, the drive there was pretty easy except for a bit of a delay stuck behind a wide load for a while.
Arriving at the Big 4 CP at Howard Springs at 5pm it was packed solid, thank god we booked, there no way we would have got in otherwise. It was a bit different than the last week were we had lots of choice regarding camp spots and had lots of space, here its a bit like a sardine can.
Once set up and showered we headed of to the local pub for a meal, not a bad spot really, meals were nice and well priced, after dinner its an early night, its been a long day.
Tomorrow we will do some exploring.
