Darwin Via the Gulf June/July 2013 Day 217/06/13

Travelled from Emerald to Charters Towers today, a much easier day than yesterday, the road was good, there was less roadworks, and very little traffic in either direction.

It was fairly uneventful except for the massive wide load we came across coming from the opposite direction, it was a bull dozer on a trailer being towed by 2 prime movers, wide enough to take up almost both lanes, it would have been very awkward indeed if we had come across it on a stretch where we couldn't get off the road !

We arrived in Charters Towers at 1300hrs and stopped at Lissner Park for lunch, a beautiful park where the boys could run around and stretch the legs while we made lunch. The only draw back were the multitude of flying foxes perched in some of the larger trees.

Lunch out of the way we went for a drive around the town, being a Sunday almost everything was closed so after a quick look and a fuel stop we headed for our accommodation for the night, Aussie Outback Oasis CP.

The Park was really nice, green grass, fantastic pool, quiet, nice staff, and clean well maintained cabins.

While the kids enjoyed the pool and jumping castle we rustled up a little platter of of nibbles which we all enjoyed on the balcony overlooking the pool, its a tough life.

After a little snack and a couple of beers I left Joanne and the boys and went on a little walk to snoop around a little, I hadn't gone far when I came across a small group of tree cutters staying in the park while in the working in the area, G'day Mate led to a chat which lead to wanna beer mate, an hour and a couple of beers later Joanne and the boys tracked me down down and joined us.

For the next hour or so we enjoyed their company and got lots of great advice about the area, before we left the boys and myself were treated to a view of the surrounding area from the basket of their cherry picker 19 meters off the ground, Awesome !

Tonight is our last night of luxury in cabins, tomorrow we are off to Mt Suprise and the Lava Tubes.

Oh, highly recommend the Outback Oasis Cabin and Caravan Park in Charters Towers.
