Darwin Via the Gulf June/July 2013 Day 419/06/13
Woke up to a fantastic day, not a cloud in the sky and warm and sunny, the night was cool but very comfortable.
0830 and we were on the bus for the Undara Lava Tubes, on the 20 min bus drive we had a great commentary from the driver explaining the historical and geological history of Mt Surprise and Undara.
On the way we had a close encounter with some of the local wildlife, a roo which we clipped, the driver stopped and walked back to rescue it, I watched him struggling with it for a bit then he came back without it, I guess it didn't want rescuing.
The tour was just fantastic, encompassing the volcano rim walk and then a tour of part of what is said to be the longest continual lava tube in the world, the grade of the walk is said to be moderate in difficulty but there were some spots where we were going down steep rocky paths.
Returning to Mount Surprise we decide to check the town out, we intended eating at the pub, but when we sat down in the eating area we changed our minds, it was smelly, the wine glass the wife got was filthy, and the food menu looked average at best.
The museum in town is a sight to behold, a combination of old wares and live snakes, I believe they do a snake show there of an evening.
All in all our Mount Surprise experience was great, mainly because of Undara Lava Tubes, and Bedrock Village CP which is fantastic.
Bedrock Village was clean and well kept the staff very friendly and helpful, the sites were large and grassy with lots of shade.
After dinner in the camp there was entertainment by way of a campfire concert consisting of guitar and singing by the parks host Joe, didgeridoo by the Kiwi Undara tour guide, and singing (in Japanese) and guitar by a Japanese staff member. Where else but the Aussie Outback could you find anything like this, very entertaining.
