Darwin Via the Gulf June/July 2013 Day 520/06/13
Headed off this morning after a nice coffee from the cafe at Bedrock Village, it was a fairly long drive (420k) and for the most part pretty boring, stopped in at Georgetown and Croydon both very nice places to stop for a break but you wouldn't stay overnight.
We arrived at Normanton about 1400 hrs and were soon glad we did not book to stay there, we did have a little look around and saw the supposedly biggest Croc ever shot, got the obligatory photos and headed off after a fuel up ($1.72 lt) to Kurumba.
Approaching Karumba the scenery changed very fast from scrub to flood plains.
Arriving at our destination, Kurumba Point CP we were greeted by very friendly staff telling us that we were the second last booked guests to a arrive, it was clear that if you don't book at this time of the year you will not get in.
After checking in we were shown to our site which was large and well situated, setting up took a short time and we were ready to enjoy the 4pm happy hour in the park, from 4-5pm they have a mini outdoor market where you can buy homemade trinkets, fishing gear, hats clothes etc. You can also get a cheap meal of sausages on bread on fresh prawns.
After the happy hour we went down to the part of town on the waters edge, there is a tavern there where you can have a feed and a drink while watching the sun go down, we ate Salt Pepper Calamari and chips, had a beer and wine and watched a beautiful sunset. The food there was great and not to dear, but don't get your take-ways there, it very expensive over the bar.
Now back at the CP enjoying a beer and wine, its very quiet even though the park is very full, I guess everybody is weary after travelling or maybe fishing.
So far our experience at Kurumba has been great.
