Day 122 16/11/11 stayed at Norseman and decided to do a day trip up to Kalgoorlie. Passed thru Widgemootha and guess what, nothing there!
Walked the main st of Kalgoorlie, still 10 or so pubs all built around 1898, but missed seeing Questa Casa, the oldest brothel in Australia and missed taking the 1 hr tour!
Learnt all the history of Paddy and his mates finding the gold and subsequent gold rush. Went down the old shaft 6 storeys down and relived the hard life of a miner, then saw the pouring of a gold ingot, all at the Miners Hall of Fame. What a pity this piece of history is closing in 3 weeks. Hopefully it won't be lost forever and maybe a rescue can be worked out.
Day 123 17/11/11 left Norseman for the Eyre Highway.
1st stop Balladonia, par 3, 175 m Skylab hole of the Nullabor golf links,
It's a rough hole and the flies will take you away!
Actual Skylab piece fell to ground here 1979.
Played another hole at 90 mile straight and camped at Jilah Rockhole.
Plenty of shade but still allowed big star gazing right across Nullabour.
Day 124 18/11/11 did really quick pack up before the flies were awake.
Lose 2 1/2 hours today so behind already.
Many lookouts over ocean and Bunda Cliffs. Spectacular .
Off to Nullabour Roadhouse where we stayed with Gloria and kids 13 years ago. Gloria was none too impressed then with the well used chenille bed covers amongst other things. Looks like it hasn't changed much.
The Head of the Bight has changed tho with a brand new board walk and
shop. Takes you much further out over the cliffs but price has also changed to $12 with whales and $5 without. Sadly whales left 24/10.
There were 60 whales born so would have been quite a sight!
Cactus Beach had the tick from Camp 6 so we headed there. Didn't seem too good as we were crossing salt lakes and vegetation practically non existent but the bible was right again. What a beach, renowned surf beach with 2 left handers and 1 right. Beautiful and beautiful sunsets.
Camping area offers no shade but waist high walled, no roof toilets and shelters with pot belly type fires gave it something extra.
Nearby pier and quiet bay with shark proof swimming area also gave options. With couple of listed shark attacks in the area, I know where I would swim!
Camp owner and old surfer himself kept the place spotless and quite a character, always up for a chat!
Had to be a 2 day stay!
Day 126 20/11/11 sunday. still getting up late thanks to biological clocks out of whack, so late start again. Just wanted to go somewhere around Streaky Bay anyway. Great coastal scenery but camping looked a bit sad till we came across Speeds Point. This deserves a tick in my book!
High up limestone cliffs, overlooking beach which was easily accessible,in a large bay, $5 per person, fairly sheltered, glorious sunsets, 360deg night sky, 1 other tent, and caught 4 good sized fish! Does it get any better.
Also a must for a 2 day stay, we'll never get home at this rate!
Day 128 22/11/11 tues, saw a big fin in our bay so I encouraged guy to stop the packing up and go down on the rocks for a closer look. Oops, whilst rock hopping I took a fall, saved the camera but left a layer of skin from face and legs behind. Got me out of packing up and had a coffee made for me! Bit drastic ! And the fish...... Probs just a big cod.
Leftstreaky bay for and Kimba, geographical halfway across Oz.
