DAY 36 drop in to see Fran at her teahouse in Larrimah, good strudel and not from machine, coffee. 8 people in the town and she's fighting with half of them. Been there 23 years, as you can tell we got her life story and can give good directions to anywhere. I hear her buff (buffalo) pies are the best, just ask her!
Arrived at 12 mile yards camp, Elsey NP Mataranka .
Plenty of spaces, beautiful river, freshwater crocs, kangas, noisy donkeys. Put the dingy in that afternoon for that very elusive Barra but, middle of river, forgot the rods. Ah well it was a very nice sightseeing trip down to the falls and checking out the crocs.DAY. 37 staying over, popped in the tinnie a couple of times as we could just leave it tied up in water.
Caretakers very nice, recommended Bitter Springs. What a fantastic place, bush setting unlike the Mataranka springs, a bit of gunny stuff floats down every so often, but as G said on many occasions "it's just SO clear!" 34 deg just what's needed to get out all that Tennant creek dust! Egrets and kingfishers catching fish, really needed snorkel and mask.DAY 38 those donkeys were so loud. Apparently there are hundreds in the NP . Another fish and another dip in the springs.
Another read and more walking. Barra feeding at Mataranka was great show, may be the closest we ever get.DAY 39 after 3 nights have to leave so we can meet the troups in Darwin on Friday . Checked out Katherine and Nitmiluk for later on,
Camping ground expensive. More like a caravan park $34 double unpowered site, has swimming pool. Place is really catering for the tour buses and Ghan travelers. Can understand but I don't need it.
Hit road again to Edith Falls, no need for swimming pool, falls are 150m away, beautiful wide gorge. G found a mertons water monitor, a snake on his way to take cover, heaven!DAY40 off again, short look at litchfield then darwin.
