Baz - The Landy

Throughout June and July we will be travelling to Maralinga and along the “bomb tracks” surveyed and built by the legendary Len Beadell and his team during the 1950s and 1960s.

The first of the tracks will be the Anne Beadell Highway, and later the Sandy Blight Junction Track after travelling along the Great Central Road.

We are very much looking forward to visiting Maralinga Village and a tour of the Forward Range with Robin Matthews, the caretaker of Maralinga Village. Robin has been instrumental in opening up this area to like-minded travellers and explorers’ like us, and I include the ExploroZ community in the “us” and hopefully his work in this regard is recognised and appreciated by many others in the future.

I would also like to pass a special thanks to ExplorOz Member’s, Mick O, and Stephen L (Clare SA), both of whom have given me their time, insight, and guidance in planning aspects of this trip. This is what makes the EO community!

Our son, TomO, has also assisted in the planning, something we have always been keen to encourage him to do on all our trips, whether it be to climb in the mountains, or tour the outback. I highlighted to him the other day that in all probability he would most likely be the only person at his school that has been to a “ground zero” site where a nuclear bomb has been detonated!

He responded by saying “how cool is that” adding that perhaps in time others will follow. His comments make it all worthwhile for us as parents…

We will put the new Toyota 79 Series through its paces on this trip and will be taking our Track Tvan...

Following is our trip document which I have put together using information sourced mostly from local tourism sites, in addition to the ExplorOz resource and input from those mentioned and others who have passed that way previously…
