Just back from a week around Orbost and East Gippsland. Terrific spot down there and a much cooler place to be in January than Wagga!
The highlights?
Beers on the verandah at the Eskdale Hotel. And a big hello to Laddie at the Eskdale caravan park.
Mitta Mitta. Beautiful little town with a fantastic swimming hole!
FREE breakfast in Forest Park in Orbost on Australia Day. Great work Orbost Rotary Club!!! Can also recommend the Orbost Caravan Park. Very clean and with grass that's as thick and lush as our golf greens back at home!
The Orbost Olympic Pool A great place on a stinking hot day. And hi to Jim, the lifeguard. Also met Graeme who I believe started the Landcruiser Owner's Club in Victoria...
Fish and Chips at the Marlo Pub watching the sunset.
Cape Conran. Great walks on the beach and in the banksia heath. Campsites at Banksia Bluff looked OK but very crowded.
Yeerung River. A few kilometres east of Cape Conran. Put the kayak in and paddled and swam for a couple of hours. The wind was howling offshore but we were very protected in the River itself. A couple of blokes were trolling lures behind Hobie kayaks and were pulling in some good bream!
Buchan Caves. Toured through the Fairy Cave with Guide Danny. The facilities at Buchan are awesome but the swimming pool was errr......Buchan freezing!
Pinocchio's Pizza at Lakes Entrance
The Barry Way. We drove from south to north and camped at Willis. This seemed the best of all the camps on the way. Plenty of shade and easy access to The Snowy for a swim.
Suggan Buggan school house. Did they really school 13 kids in that tiny room?
We stopped off for a scout around Jindabyne and seemed to be the only people in town without a ski boat so we headed for the peace at Berridale instead.
1385km later we were back in 41 degrees in Wagga. And with a green swimming pool. Did you know swimming pool shop owner's know you're on holidays and sneak into your backyard and magically make your poolwater go green???
