Here was a problem. Any food they sent to the fighting men had to be carried in the ships of the Merchant Navy. Most of these were lucky to maintain a speed of ten knots (18.5 kilometers per hour). Most had no refrigerated facilities, so any food sent had to be able to remain edible after periods in excess of two months. A body of women came up with the answer - a biscuit with all the nutritional value possible. The basis was a Scottish recipe using rolled oats. These oats were used extensively in Scotland, especially for a heavy porridge that helped counteract the extremely cold climate. The term ANZAC is protected under Australian law and therefore the word should not be used without permission from the Minister for Veterans' Affairs misuse can be legally enforced particularly for commercial purposes. There is a general exemption granted for ANZAC Biscuits, as long as these biscuits remain basically true to the original recipe and are both referred to and sold as ANZAC Biscuits and never as cookies. While viewing an old episodes earlier in the year there was a segment that gave a recipe and instructions for making damper. We tried it on a recent camping trip and it was a great success, so I thought it worth sharing. The Leyland's suggested that the damper would take 20-25 mins to cook, but they had used an aluminium cake tin, whereas our cast iron oven takes longer to heat through. In the end I took it out after about an hour and it was cooked perfectly (except the top was a little browner that I had intended). It was a huge hit with everyone on our camping trip. It tasted much like a traditional scone you might enjoy with a Devonshire tea. The length of the pipe is that which comfortably fits between the door pillers. In a 100 series Land Cruiser this is about 1350mm if you are storing whites (they are taller) or only has to be 1250mm if storing reds. Each pipe holds 4 bottles so work out how many bottles you wish to take, divide it by 4 and thats how many pipes you need. Bind them together before you place them in the vehicle. Put 4 bottles in each pipe and plug with a cloth or you maybe able to buy caps. When you have drunk a bottle push it in the opposite end of the same pipe which will push up the next bottle and cart away the empty.
