According to Simon Blyth, CEO of LX Group, it’s official: the Internet of Things (IoT) is the next technology revolution – set to be bigger than the industrial revolution and more transformative than the dot.com boom.

Participants in Australian Engineering Week 2015 will have the one off chance to hear this IoT entrepreneur and industry leader’s predictions about the growth and opportunities that this technical revolution will bring when Mr Blyth presents Beyond 2020 – What the Internet of Things (IoT) revolution means for you on Thursday 6 August at the Australian Technology Park.

The global impact of the IoT will be monumental, affecting all aspects of our lives. With only 0.06% of devices with the potential to be connected to the internet currently connected, forecasts indicate there will be 50 billion devices connected by 2020 - and who is going to get us there? Engineers, of course.

Bruce Howard - President of Engineers Australia Sydney Division says everyone who owns a smart device is holding a piece of engineering.

“Engineers are the driving force behind new innovations in smart technology and we are only just at the beginning of the possibilities. This session is your opportunity to hear from an award-winning entrepreneur, whose company LX is leading the way in this technological revolution,” said Mr Howard.

IoT has the potential to change the way businesses and consumers approach the world with recent examples including the Fitbit and Apple watch. Mr Blyth will also talk attendees through real life potential innovations, for example the humble toothbrush. Connected to the internet and embedded with microcomputer or sensory equipment, the smart toothbrush could talk to your dentist, measure levels of bacteria, scan your mouth for cavities and more – effectively improving a human process through feedback and revolutionising dentistry.

LX Group specialises in the development of IoT solutions and has been in the BRW Fast 100 every year since 2012. In 2014, the company won an Engineering Excellence Award for Project Caramello, an IoT solution they developed to help track koala populations.

Australian Engineering Week will take place in Sydney between Saturday 1 and Tuesday 11 August 2015. With a vast array of interactive activities, talks, and workshops, the event will celebrate this innovative industry and the valuable contribution engineers provide to the economic, social and technological aspects of our daily lives.
