Food Additives - Update

I've just received my newsletter from Additive Alert - containing interesting news about companies that are changing recipes to reduce known harmful additives, and a list of lobbying ideas to work on together, plus some good news about bread. I'm pasting the link to the newsletter online for anyone that is interested - Additive Alert Newsletter (online)

Also, I recently tried to buy mayonaise and was surprised to find it has the harmful additive antioxidant 320 (it seems to be in a lot of food unfortunately). I was so dismayed, I returned home without buying any mayonaise and got onto the Additive Alert website to find out if they had any recommendations as to what brands were safe - I found a section called Foods we Love and quickly found out which brand was safe (ie. contains no additive 320, nor other harmful additives), and of course, it was on the shelves but I had missed it (ugly jar on top shelf!). Only problem is its in a huge glass jar, so I just have to decant into a more user-friendly plastic squeeze bottle (better for travel and kids). But better that I think that pump the kids full of things that are going to potentially cause long term harm. I honestly can't ignore this sort of thing, when cancer seems to be the biggest killer of humans and the probability of us getting cancer has been so much higher since we introduced so many manufactured foods into our diet - I'm more than happy to make a bit of effort to use different brands on the advice of such research.

Hi David & Michelle,

Just looking around and going with the flow - found this post and do agree with your stand whole-heartedly. Had a look at the Additive Alert site, thanks for that. We have made great efforts to maintain high levels of nutrition when we're travelling which means buying fresh stuff, cooking a lot, and using the fridge wisely. We carry dry grains, root vegies & fruit in a sling, cans of things like chick peas, meat cryovac packed and so forth. We also keep things in the fridge that travel well such as red capsicum and celery rather than lettuce This means we avoid as many additives as possible. The supermarket list is mostly loo paper and rolled oats :-)

We also attend to hygiene well - good wash-ups, no plastic plates with scores in them that harbour nasties, and so on.

Good eating!

Interesting perspective - I'd always heard the probability of cancer was higher since the introduction of modern medicines & healthcare which now allows us to live long enough to get cancer (instead of dying of something else first!)

Hi Michelle, great to see this blog here. As a natural therapist this is something I am very passionate about, the main problem is most of us live a really busy lifestyle and most of these foods are convenient. Sue Dengate is one of my hero's her website is http://www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info/ as a mum of 3 kids I try very hard to have a diet and lifestyle as natural as possible. There are also a lot of nasties in health care products here is another website that may be of interest http://www.mionegroup.com/ We made the decision to travel Oz in our van with no time limit July 08 - we started the journey November 08 and haven't looked back, having this lifestyle enables me to cook the old fashioned way so I know exactly what goes into the meals, snacks, ect. Cheers Caz

Thanks Caz - as you're a natural therapist I'm interested to ask you a side question as in the early 1990s I tried the Fit For Life/Food Combining Principles documented by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond with great results but like most of these things fell back into the more usual routine to suit socialising with friends/family. I've recently re-read the books and for the past 4 weeks have been giving it a go again but am unsure how to balance this with all my training - I am simply starving by dinner and end up eating a fairly hearty meal at the end of day - and thinking this is counter-productive. One of my aims is to reduce my BMI to 22 (currently 23) so I would like to lose about 4kgs also. If you get a chance and this isn't too bothersome, would love your feedback on this approach or other suggestions. Oh, and love your rig, and kids and photos and blog stories - well done you guys! What a great adventure. Best wishes, Michelle

Hi Michelle,

Good question, I googled fit for life as I hadn't heard of it, I don't know that this would work for everyone as everyone has a different make up, too much water can create an electrolyte imbalance, also with training you need protien in your diet - meat has protien and iron, I don't believe that we can digest wheat properly as the gluten content (protien of wheat) is very high, I try and use spelt (much lower gluten content) and better for digestion - I am very interested in the "eat right for your type diet" some info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_type_diet I haven't fully studied this however it seems to make a sense to me, there are so many people who lose it then gain it. It worries me that you are hungry at the end of the day - its not supposed to be that way, and I believe that we all need to "listen" to our bodies. I go with everything in moderation. I take In-liven which is a probiotic, check this link for info http://www.mionegroup.com/en/product/15101 I am currently working through a diploma in reflexology, I then intend to study nutrition as this is something that really interests me. Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help any further.
Cheers
Caz
