Description of Curran Curran Water Hole
This is a waterhole located in a low rocky range 48.5 km east of
Hanging Rock in the
Rudall River National Park. It is the first feature you come to when heading to
Hanging Rock from the
Tjingkulatjatjarra Pool. It is approximately 22.2 km west of the track intersection (Blue with arrow) to
Hanging rock near Tjing-etc etc Pool. The
GPS plots listed here are for a large Eucalypt at the base of the gorge which provides a great spot for morning tea. The rockpool is approximately 100 metres into the shallow gorge. It is a large
rock hole approx 5 metres long by a metre in depth. Water is usually green but provides a haven for birdlife. To rocky for Camels. The rock pool is not marked on the Hema Great Desert series Maps.
On a return visit to the area in 2007, we found that a fire had swept right through this country. The gum tree at the entrance to the small gorge was unharmed but the surrounding bush had been burnt off. The jar for notes that was normally found under the gumtree was missing.
As at our Visit in July, 2009, onlyl a very shallow and scummy pool of water remains in the rockhole. The well worn trail left by the local dingos and roos indicates that it is still supporting the local wildlife for the meantime. The dry spell since 2006 has taken its toll on most water holes within the park.
