the story of TOM KRUSE
The Birdsville Track is one of the best known, and loneliest tracks in Australia. Tom Kruse was the mailman along this route for a total of twenty years intermittently between the 1920's, 30's, 40's and 50's, battling everything from searing heat and floods to mechanical breakdown. This is truly a classic Australian story and captures part of our history that is fast vanishing.

He began in the days before reliable vehicles, good communications and air access in case of emergency. He made running repairs to the truck, and he loaded and unloaded tons of stores to ferry his cargo across flooded creeks.
Tom Kruse always got the mail through - come drought, hell or high water.

'Author Kristin Weidenbach's account of this famous enterprise balances its hardships with humour and a great sense of camaraderie'WEEKEND AUSTRALIAN.
