This trek, north-east of Melbourne, can be a challenging 4WD adventure. Traversing the Toolangi-Black Range and Eildon-Big River state forests, passing trout filled streams, excellent bushwalks, fossicking opportunities and an abundance of native animals and birds you could well want to take your time exploring this region.  Environment

Until recently Fraser National Park existed on the western shore of Lake Eildon, and Eildon State Park occupied the land around the south-western, southern and south-eastern shores of the lake. These have now been amalgamated and renamed Lake Eildon National Park.

The Lake Eildon National Park has a large diversity of animals and birds that make their homes in eucalypt forests and lakes.

 History

In 1839, Eildon Station was established. It was named after Eildon Hills in Roxburghshire in Scotland. Gold was discovered in 1867, but only in small amounts. Whilst travelling in this area, you will see remains of the gold digging days. In 1928, after taking 14 years to build, Sugarloaf Dam was built. In 1951, work started on the enlargement of the dam. It was completed in 1955 and renamed Lake Eildon. Lake Eildon was built for both the generation of hydro-electricity and irrigation purposes. It is one of Victoria's largest man-made lakes and has a shoreline of 515kms.

Mud Map

Description Waypoint
Healesville is just 60km north of Melbourne on the Maroondah Highway. Head north out of town  37 39' 20" S, 145 30' 50" E
Turn left onto the St Leonard's Road.
The Myers Creek Scenic Reserve is about 7km along.
4km further on is the signpost for Mt St Leonard Lookout Tower. Turn right onto the gravel road of Toolangi-Black Range Forest Drive. 37 34' 5" S, 145 30' 25" E
The turnoff to the lookout is another 3.5km along this track, walking access only from the padlocked gate.

Note: A user has advised ExplorOz that the turnoff to Quarry Road no longer exists but that you can still make your way through to Marginal Rd....

Another walking track to the right is Myrtle Gully, this takes you to the carpark at Tanglefoot Picnic Area which you will soon drive past. Take the right hand bend onto Syliva Creek Rd and you pass another information board for a rainforest walk.

Past the Tanglefoot Carpark turn left into Kalatha Rd .

37 30' 30" S, 145 32' 25" E
At Klondyke Rd turn left and at the intersection with Marginal Rd turn right. 37 26' 10" S, 145 30' 30" E
After 9km you come to the Murrindindi Scenic Reserve and Wilhelmina Falls off to the right. There is camping and picnic facilities including pit toilets, bbqs and an easy 3.6km walk to the falls.

Past Murrindindi, its just a few kilometres to the Black Range State Forest. There are quite a few side tracks so it might be worthwhile to have a good map with you.

Just after Ault Beeac picnic area turn right at the signpost to Tratford Break. You are heading towards Black Range and Alexandra. 37 19' 35" S, 145 33' 45" E

Out of Alexandra take the Goulburn Valley Hwy, the Fraser National Park is to your left. The camping areas at Candlebark, Devil Cove and Lakeside all have flush toilets and hot showers but not power. Bookings are essential for peak periods. Walks in the park lead you around the lake edge or onto the ridges from where there are magnificent views of Lake Eildon and surrounds. Autumn is especially scenic with willows and golden poplars.

Thornton is located near the south-western end of Lake Eildon. A fish hatchery and fish research centre will explain much of the project to visitors. The main camping area within the Lake Eildon NP is at Jerusalem Creek. Drive 10km east of Eildon along Old Jamieson Road. The basic camping spots on the southern boundary of the park are reached by turning off the Goulburn Valley Hwy, 5km before Eildon, into the Eildon-Jamieson Rd. From the Jerusalem Creek camping area, you can take the Sheoak Creek Nature Walk, which follows the creek for 2km. Other walks offering attractive views include the Pinnacles, Rocky Spur to Cable Track and Wilson's Track.

Head out of Thornton onto Skyline Road.

After 10km you come to a roundabout where you need to take the first exit and turn right to continue along Skyline Road.
After 9km turn right at the intersection to Maintongoon Rd and continue onto the Maroondah Hwy at Mansfield. Just before Mansfield is the turnoff to Peppin Point, which takes you to the shores of Lake Eildon.

Mansfield is a junction for many trips in the Victorian High Country. You can head NW to Benalla, NE to Tomi and Mt Buller or south to Jamieson, continuing the loop around Lake Eildon.

South of Jamieson you will need to check road conditions as this trek involves the notorious Mt Terrible Track. Do not attempt this track after rain and it is best to travel in convoy through this section. The track is generally closed from 13 June - 31 October and is steep and rocky.
The bypass route is to head south to the Triangle then west to Cambraville. It would be a shame to miss the Mt Terrible Track so try to plan this trip to avoid bad weather. There are numerous campsites and picnic areas around the 25 Mile Creek, Big Bend Creek, Frenchman's Creek and Big River all with great views and few facilities.

The Cumberland Memorial Scenic Reserve is a picnic area with relics of an old sawmill and the Cambraville township. 1km from her is the Big Culvert historic site and a walking track on the left. As an alternative to heading straight to Marysville, turn right at signpost to Lake Mountain and onto bitumen. There are more picnic areas along here and the Myrtle Loop Walking Track near Keppel Falls (just across the highway from the Myrtle Gully walk to the Tanglefoot Reserve. At Keppel Falls Lookout there are great views to the Taggerty River. Other falls in the region are Phantom Falls and Steavenson Falls just past Marysville.

At Marysville, this trek rejoins the Maroondah Highway to finish in Healesville.
