Description
This trek passes through the Department of Defence Army/Navy ‘live firing’ range and at times is closed. Please phone: (08) 9311 2772 to check the access status. It is also important to check beach driving conditions as occasionally the beach is impassable just south of Wedge Island.
Although only 74km in length this trip will take a full day of driving but there's lots to do (sand surfing,
fishing
, snorkelling, hiking, and wildflowers) so why not make a few days of the trip. If you intend to camp at Narrow Neck then please ensure you take your rubbish with you.
Undoubtedly, the trickiest part of this trip is
navigation
. There is a maze of tracks around the beach headlands and through dunes and if the beach between Wedge Island and Grey is closed, then you'll need to pick up the inland track. You can try your luck with any track you see as they'll all lead either north or south eventually, however if you want the most direct route without getting stuck it is wise to take some digital
navigation
equipment with you.

Preparation
You will need to be prepared for a variety of terrains from hard capstone to soft sand, so an air compressor is mandatory. You'll need to use sand driving tyre pressures and be prepared to use 4WD in sections. Ensure that you have checked the beach conditions just south of the Wedge Island where a tricky section of the beach is often impassable, especially in Spring and Summer, when the wind and wave action steeply erodes the beach line. Many have unfortunately tried and failed. Check out the "wall of fame" at the Lancelin Roadhouse and take a tide chart for this area and avoid high tides.
Preparation for this route should be as for any other relatively remote 4WD track, including carrying sufficient fuel, water, food, supplies,
communications
gear, safety equipment and
first aid
, along with emergency backup supplies. It is advised that you affix a dune flag to your vehicle, as this trip has become quite popular in both directions and head-on collisions have occurred, especially on long-weekends. Please make sure you have adequate
recovery gear
. Travellers should read the
4WDriving
Topic for related articles and checklists for
vehicle setup
and driver awareness.

How are we all, i just returned yesterday from doing the Beach Run from Lancelin to Wedge Island and i must hand my thanks out to the site for some useful info.
Me mate ran up with his suzuki vitara and i ran up with my 4 runner i gotta say those lil suzuki's are rippers ey. My advice out there to anyone attempting the beach run firstly, watch out for a couple major drops in the dunes just out of Lancelin, i nearly had an interesting meeting with the bottom of one hahaha, and watch the tides keep high on the beach as it can get a lil deceiving, i probably wouldnt advise attempting this time of year with only one vehicle. Oh an goes without sayin watch out for other vehicles had a couple surprising corners
Never the less a brilliant run some great scenery and only the suzuki got bogged (only cause someone got a lil cocky with a dune).
Anyhow time to find my next adventure, Cheers

Hi all
To the WA people Anybody know what the conditions are like out at Wedge Island this time of year, Was thinking of doing a day trip but have been told the beach conditions can be impassable around this time of year and it's not recommended??
Is it do able Via the Inland route or is it a wast of time ATM.
Also I may be towing a taller with my Quad bike as well, I am looking for a nice day out, not one on the end of a shovel recovering the 4BY LOL
I have only done it 2 times both in summer.
Advise.
Thanks

ExplorOz Trek Notes are detailed, factual reviews of destinations in Australia to which you can plan a self-drive camping trip. This page will enable you to access over 100 of these trek notes, using various search methods and at a glance you can see what treks we have in each area across Australia.
[Feature Story]
Wilbinga
Popular with locals, this track is one of the rare locations near metro Perth where you can legally drive amongst the sand dunes and get onto the beach line. This trek is suitable for most levels of experience.
West Swan to Muchea
Parts of this trek are quite popular as a sand-driving course and it provides various levels of difficulty depending on the exact track you decide to take. There are often two or three tracks running parallel, with each presenting different challenges.
Ningaloo Reef Adventure
Just about every West Australian has heard of Ningaloo, but surprisingly, its an oddity to most other Australians. Located between Exmouth and Coral Bay about 1200km north of Perth, Ningaloo is about 300 km long and is the largest fringing coral reef in Australia.
Minilya Exmouth Road
This sealed road trek is suited for vehicles towing caravans and camper trailers heading to Exmouth from Coral Bay. The Minilya Exmouth Road heads north of Coral Bay for over 150kms passing the massive Learmonth RAAF Base & Airport and Kailis Fisheries.
Perth to Coral Bay
This highway based trek note follows Route No. One up the WA coast to the tourist Mecca of Coral Bay. Take in the coastal towns of the Batavia Coast, including Dongara and Geraldton - maybe staying overnight or two before reaching the southern gateway to the Ningaloo Reef.
Wandoo Woodlands
Another challenging day trip out of Perth and taking in the Wandoo Woodlands conservation area, this is part of the original 'Chauncy line' built by convicts in the late 1840s.
Powerline Trek
This is a popular 4WD day-trek close to Perth. Previously full of exciting challengings in muddy winter conditions, the track has been repaired to ensure your chances of getting bogged are removed. It still provides steep rocky inclines and good scenery.
Stockyard Gully
These caves are located some 250 km north of Perth. It's an easy 1 day trek from Perth with only a short section of sandy, limestone outcropped track to reach the caves.
Steep Point
This trek heads towards Steep Point - the most westerly point of the Australian mainland. Vehicle access is by 4WD only. After returning to the main junction (approx 8kms south of Cloughs Bar), the second part of the trek heads towards Crayfish Bay.
Quobba Coast
Red Bluff is located on Quobba Station, along the rugged Gascoyne Coast, north of Carnarvon. The spectacular headland provides a sheltered bay and camping area ideal for swimming, snorkelling, fishing and surfing.
Shark Bay and Steep Point
This arid coastal area has extraordinary appeal. The World Heritage listed Shark Bay area is home to more than a few unique natural wonders including living stromatolites, dugongs and dolphins. Steep Point is Australia's most westerly point (4WD only)
