How do I secure camper with Treg Hitch??

Submitted: Monday, Feb 02, 2004 at 18:06

Moneypit

Any brilliant ideas out there as to how I could go about securing the camper when its at home and all by itself. Its fitted with a TREG hitch.

I can't get it out of the public view and would like to know if there is anything better than chaining it to the pole and hoping any potential thief does not have his bolt cutters with him.

I'm guessing people will have come up with cheap homemade ideas or there is a commercial venture that deals with it.

Looking forward to hearing the wealth of ideas. Or even just one good one.

Same question placed in two forums so no matter which one you answer [and I'm sure a number of us visit both places] I'll get the reply.

Thank you.

Dave

Hello Moneypit, If you weld a chain link (the size chain used as safety towing chain) onto the hitch facing up and another on the drawbar you will be able to turn the hitch on its side and the two will meet up. You can then get a good quality padlock to secure the two. It will save having to find a pole but if the thief comes prepared they will get it. But they do need a Treg hitch receiver to tow it. The other ideas are those clamps used on wheels.

Cheers

I have a device that is commercialy manufactured for treg style hitches. It is a treg pin made from 316 stainless with a bilock end. you just put it in the hitch when it's not being used. I secure my trailer in the front yard with it.

Hi Moneypit, not sure if this is what you're after but all I've done is drill out the hole at the bottom of the pin so that it'll take a decent padlock. I can now padlock to the car or just have a padlock through the pin when it's sitting idle - which I'm sure would discourage the light fingered lot....

Cheers, Brumlm

We sell the Couplemate products in our Adventure Shop here on ExplorOz, however they've only just released made a trailer lock compatible with the Tregg. Give us a few weeks and we'll have this online in the shop too.Regards Michelle,

Jeez Michelle

It is time for the busy people [and Dave keeps telling us that you both are] to be getting some shut eye.

I will take the wheels off and use a chain but I will also look at the device when it turns up.

A friend of mine just uses a Hayman-Reese style locking pin through the Tregg block. Fits perfectly.

Look up the Talon section. I use a non treg type for my tradesmans trailer with the hayman reese also fitted with a matching locking pin. It has foiled two attempted thefts from the vehicle that I know of. One fellow was a little surprised as a size 11 steel cap connected with his kidneys as he tried to belt the lock off with a mash hammer....ahh well you get that when your'e a low life theif. Best $310 I ever spent.
