4wd owners " we did it again!"

Submitted: Tuesday, Feb 03, 2004 at 12:15

Bazza

G'Day all,
Please see following letter from today's Sydney Daily Telegraph. Letters section ....

" We read and hear about supermarket trolleys being abandoned all over the place, often far from their bases.
Some are later recovered at considerable cost; the rest usually finish up in creek, gullies, dumps etc.
Who are these eslfish, inconsiderate morons who practise this weird ritual?
They wouldn't by any chance be the same people with big heads who ride high on 4WDs in suburad areas, going shopping in these road monsters and taking their little ones to and from school?
They must be, because my hatchback couldn't possibly accomodate a shopping trolley on board.
This is just one more black mark against those road pests and their owners."

Anyone what to buy a shopping trolley?
Regards,
Bazza

Jealousy can really be a curse can't it.

Some people like putting things into ill informed pre-conceived boxes - nothing we can do about them apart from walk away when they open their mouths at social functions (and then again they tend to stay together so normal people would not see them at social functions) and give their bigotted ideas away. It's the pensioners and low income single mums that I see pushing trolleys of groceries home into estates and areas that are poorly service by public transport. They can't afford a car or a taxi so they just push the trolley home - often several kms. (not picking on these people, just stating fact)

The other ones are the bored kids that take any trolleys not picked up out of the carparks by the supermarkets and push there mates around late at night for something to do.

Surely these are more plausable explanations.

How the hell this guy comes to blame 4WD owners is a complete mystery to me! I've got better things to do with my time and vehicle - like go bush!

Sorry guys. I have to fess-up. I do it.

Between the hours of 3:00 am and 6:00 am every Sunday morning I search all the local shopping centres, grab all the stray trolleys (the few the juvenile delinquents have left behind) and then dump them in a variety of bush locations.

The idea was that 4x4 Clubs can then score brownie points when they clear the bush sites because, lets face it, nobody else conducts clean up campaigns - removing dumped vehicles (almost none of which are 4x4s), dumped tyres, dumped construction materials and other rubbish.

Funny, I've rarely (like never) seen a news story about that. Perhaps the National Association needs to ramp up their PR, or perhaps it's just a sign of blatant bias.

I read somewhere recently that a new idea being tested is an electronic barrier at shopping centre carpark boundaries that will automatically lock the wheels as soon as the barrier is passed.
Sounds good and will stop them being wheeled out, but will it stop us 4x4 vandals being blamed when they still turn up miles away?
I doubt it, and anyway why don't the centres charge a deposit same as the airports do?

Aaahhhhhhh Shopping Trolleys.....I speak from experience!!!.

Once upon a time I had the Shopping Trolley contract for Woolworths in Alice Springs. I used spend an hour every night collecting wayward trolleys up to 5 kilometres away from the shopping centre in my LC FJ55. I employed 7 shopping trolley collectors and we worked 7 days a week.

One day I was approached by one of the elders of the Yuendumu Community which lies 290km thereabouts north west of Alice on the Tanami Road. He asked if I would come and collect the 55 Woolworths/Coles shopping trolleys which were abandoned in the township. I approached both companies to get some funding or bounty for the trip but they were not interested. I wonder how many trolleys there are now? And that was only one community!!!

So 4x4's and Shopping Trolleys are synonymous!

Cheers,
