Being a Defensive Driver Trainer on and off since 1987, the best rule is:
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".
Now for those of you who have posted revenge type tactics to combat those who accidently leave their lights on, have a think about the repercussions of your actions when you look at my rule above.
Revenge is not the answer. All of a sudden you have two people who can't see - What a bonus!!!
If someone comes up behind you and you can't see, put your left indicator on, put your foot on the brake and move over and let them go. The same applies to someone coming the other way.
In my experiences as a truck driver and driver trainer, if someone doesn't dip their lights, it is an odds on bet that they are fatigued and not paying attention.

Very true Trev, my setup is not used as a 'revevge' tactic, i'm not that crazy ( yet :-) ) i only give a split second flash, not enough to blind or dazzle as the light is aimed lower than windscreen height, it just give's em a little wake up . I would guess that 90% or so are fatiuged or the poor buggers have never been taught properly in the first place. Hey, lets not start on the ones who have no idea how to behave around trucks, I have noticed Cootes Tanker Service have undertaken their own public education excersize with some good graphics & instructions on the back of their fuel tankers, great idea but why should they have to spend their hard earned when the gov't should be teaching it in the first place.Moo... everyone knows what a Jackaroo looks like :-)
