Roof Rack Bags

Can anyone who has used a roof rack bag let me know what brands and/or features have proven themselves? We have a 2200x1250 ARB steel rack and would like to set up a bag to keep water and dust out of the gear. Especially interested if anyone has had a bag made up from scratch by a canvas shop?

Dave,
I also have an ARB roof rack (full length).
I bought the kaymar 1.2 x 1.2 canvas bag which I use on the rear of the rack, I load a spare wheel to the front of the rack and the remaining space is kept for anything else.
I have attached a thin timber base to the rack (where the bag fits) so the bag does not rub.
So far it has been to Cape York, Vic High country twice and other places.
It is excellent for sleeping gear and clothes and sometimes I carry the swag inside it too.
No dust or water ever gets in.
I would rate it excellent! but only to be used for soft stuff.

Thanks Will, I'll have a look into the Kaymar bags and what sizes they offer. I'm chasing a full length bag as I'm carrying two Oztents (light but long) on the top and they stretch to 2m each. The roof rack has been great but I find I'm taking half an hour to strap everything down.

Dave, if you live in Brisbane, give T. D. Canvas a call, ph ( 07 ) 3886 5466, they manufacture canvas or pvc roof bags to any size, they have full tie down straps sewn across the bags , and steel tie down rings on the ends of each strap, and have a full length zipper running around three sides of the bag, cheers.

Dave , look into the Bushranger Racksack. Cost about $150 and it is very good. Comes in three sizes and it is very strong

Dave, we also use the Bushranger Racksack. We use the Medium on our 1.2m long Rhino Rack. It is short of the rack length but we did this on purpose to setup (as someone else has said) a spare wheel in front and also a rubbish bag. We also put our gas bottle in the middle of the spare wheel. Inside the bag you want to keep things clean and on our last big trip we took 2 vehicles (and Nissan GQ and an 80 series Cruiser) both with same roof rack and bag setup and both remain dust free and dry over Gunbarrel Hwy, Tanami, GRR, Kalumburu Rd, East Pilbara and home to Perth. They are very well made (in fact, now a new model over the original) and it folds up well for storage. There is no flapping during travel, and there is plenty of width/height for expansion - we could not even get close to over packing it and I had a portable cot, a large canvas tent, numerous linen, clothing bags etc up there).

Call Michelle's Sacs Perth 9279 8228. They will be able to make one up for you. I have one on the roof rack (not made by Michelle) which is 1 metre x 1.2 metres x 300 mm high and holds, tent, awning, pegs, stove, camp oven etc

I had a heavy duty canvas bag made up by the local trim shop to suit a full length roof rack for the Oztent, deck chairs etc. It has two full length zips so it can be opened from either side of the vehicle. It also has a valcro flap which covers the zip and makes it water and dust proof. It cost around $180. Make sure it has adjustable straps over the top so that it will not flap when empty. If you make it slightly narrower than the roof rack there is still room for the shovel etc beside it.

I too have the Bushranger rak sack and even though it doesn't fit your requirements I would just like to say that I too think they are excellent value for money.

There is a feature on these that you might want to incorporate into the one you are going to get made. This feature is velcro sewn on the flaps that will hang down over the zippers, this way you don't have flaps that flap.

I use the bushranger bag Dave and apart from a small line of dust through the zip that showed up against the sleeping bag cover that was against it through a trip from Perth to Cape York and back it is pretty damn good. Had you thought of using a couple of 150 mm or so Water pipes with end caps as storage for your tents? I use one slung off the side of my Jaram roof rack for my fishing rods without problems. I also line the bottom of the bag with a blanket to prevent any rubbing between the contents of the bag and the roof rack gridmesh.

Hi dave, we have a SOUTHERN CROSS CANVAS roof bag, we travelled in 10 hours for poring rain and all our bedding and cloths were dry and it didnt leak, also very dust proof and it dosn"t sweat in the hot weather either. regards michelle
