looking for off road camper

Submitted: Wednesday, Mar 03, 2004 at 17:49

Graham

Hi all
I am trying to track down the manufacturer of an off road camper trailer of which I saw (2) whilst camping in a W.A. national park. All I know is that they were manufactured in Ballarat by someone called Charlie (I think) and were truly off road quality. They were made from plate aluminium with a huge storage box on the front, wheels matched to the 4WD, treg coupling etc. and the owners told me that the campers would follow anywhere that the 4WD vehicles would go.
Can anyone help ??

For a really good offroad camper check out Wanderingstar camper trailers-you can't buy a stronger built trailer.
We have owned one for over 10 years and it has traversed some of the roughest tracks in Oz.
Their web site is
www.wanderingstar.com.au.
cheers P Guy.

Thanks for your comments and I can say that I do have Wanderingstar on my 30 + websites I have yet to check out. Nothing beats recommendations from people like you who actually have used the product over a reaonable period of time.
Very much appreciated and I will check them out.

I'm sure they were not hired as the owners discussed canvaas and kitchen options they had purchased for the campers.
I have seen the Ballarat website that hires trailers but didnt know they were kimberly kampers.

We looked at the Coota Camper and thought it was great to till he showed us the 14000 poles to errect the annexe. No thanks, you would just get them all up and it would be time to pull them down again and go home. Very expensive too for what they are.

Graham,

We kept meeting trailers in W.A. the same as ours, which is also very tough. It is a Challenge Campertrailer, made in South Australia. They are also very nice people to deal with. Gareth is the boss. Phone 83896155. I know it isn't what you were asking, but a good recommendation anyway!
Happy travels.

Thanks for your response and I will definitely follow up on Challenge.
Actually I have since discovered over 30 manufacturers of camper trailers and like the Ultimate Camper but it is soooo expensive.

Hi Graham :}

Saw your comment about the Ultimate being too dear.

I have an Ultimate & the way I rationalised buying it was that I could fund the purchase price & given the guaranteed buy-back price, it was going to cost me 'diddly-doo' to own & run.

Thanks for your comments and I was unaware of the guaranteed buy-back price as I have yet to wade through details on the many available off road trailers.
I would be interested in any feedback from you on the Ultimate as it appears to be easy to use and very tough.
I have not yet totally ruled out purchasing a new ultimate trailer but would also be interested if there were any pre-loved ones available.

Hi Graham

Talk to the people at Ultimate, they are a friendly, helpful group. They are at Batemans Bay (02) 4472-9110 & I'm sure will answer all your questions.

I'm rapt in mine & I honestly believe that if the Prado will go there, the Ultimate will also.

Biggest negative is the waiting time on new & used Ultimates; they can also tell you the current situation.

Thay may be coming to the 4WD show at Darling Harbour (Sydney) this month - the web site lists what shows they are planning on doing & this may help.

Actually I have recently compared Ultimate with Kimberly Kampers (which seem to be 2 of the front runners) and after adding on "extras" the cost is not all that different to the Ultimate Odyssey standard package.
My wife and I will be checking out the Ultimate campers at the next caravan show and possibly will be Ultimate owners before the year is out.
Strange ... I originally asked about a different camper altogether.... oh well, I suppose one must not decide until after some feedback and research.

I just checked with Coota Campers, 7 poles maybe a bit much for some. A far better unit than the "Ultimate" no steps to fall down in the dark.

We have an Ultimate - we love it. And the people at Ultimate are great. We got into some trouble getting out of the Bendethera Valley last year after some rain - not the fault of the camper just the wrong tyres - they came and rescued us - talk about after sales service !
