Hello!!

I have recently purchased a 1990 toyota townace campervan to prepare to travel around Australia. At the moment it is very basic and i need to look into a few things.

How do i sort out air conditioning to work when the engine is off ie. to keep the van cool when sleeping?

There is white smoke coming out of the exhaust constantly when the engine is running. is this a big problem that needs fixing?

If there is anything you would like to pass on to me that you may have found useful when travelling ect. i would love to know!

Thanks in advance!
Lauren

Hi Lauren - You cannot run the car air conditioning without the engine running, because the engine drives the air conditioning compressor that creates the cool air.

White smoke coming from the exhaust constantly indicates major engine problems. The smoke will also see your campervan issued with a defect notice if it is sighted by the police.

A defect notice states you cannot drive on the road until the problem is fixed and you then have to present the vehicle for inspection and checking by the authorities before they will remove the defect notice.
Under pollution laws, smoke is only allowed to come from the exhaust intermittently, and only for a maximum of 10 seconds of visible smoke.

Regards, Ron.

Where do you intend to travel and at what time of year Lauren? You shouldn't need air conditioning at night in most places unless you intend to be in the tropics during summer, and a 12 volt fan can help.
