Dual Batteries in 1994 4 Runner

Looking for info re fitting of dual batteries in 1994 2.8L diesel 4 runner. Have tried a few of the commercial 4WD places (won't name names) and was basically shown the door. Biggest problem I see is the air filter system. Would appreciate any experiences with this topic.

Werner, I had the same problem when I had my 92 4 runner. I ended up having to put the battery in a battery box in the rear of the vehicle.

Werner, I am currently aiming to fit a dual battery system to my 1990 2.8 Hilux. I would imagine the engine bay would have similar layout. If you check out www.piranhaoffroad.com.au, they have some pics in their battery cradle section where it looks like the air filter has been shifted to allow for the fitting of the 2nd battery. I am currently looking into this option myself. Other options are where they have used significantly smaller batteries in the existing battery position, or mounted a much smaller battery behind the starting battery. From what I can tell, I will have to relocate my air filter and its plumbing and the power steering reservoir and its plumbing, may possibly need some slight changes to the A/C plumbing aswell. Will be discussing it all with the mechanic on friday so can get back to you when he's sussed it out more. Cheers, Sam.

You may want to check out the wreckers for the air filter set up from a Toyota surf with factory fitted dual batteries. Many come standard with this set up and the ones with 2.4 turbo motors (2LTE) should fit with little modification needed.

Hi Greg, I managed to obtain an air filter ex Surf from the wreckers. I then found out some of the subtle differences between the 4runner and surf such as the 4runner has a few humps on the LHS wheel arch which the surf does not thereby making it a bit difficult to shut the bonnet. Am looking at putting a snorkel for the intake. Have to fiddle around with it a bit more.

Werner, I have the same vehicle and I have fitted a normal size deep cycle battery underneath the back of my runner next to my 2nd fuel tank and spare wheel. I custom made a 4mm steel box to the exact size of the battery and it is bolted to the chassis. The only down fall is it can be a little difficult to get to. I can give you more details if you would like......Cam

Werner, I have a 1991 2.8 diesel 4 runner.It is an easy job to relocate the air cleaner to accommodate an auxilliary battery, just turn the unit around to face the other way.The inlet remains in the same place just the body of the unit sits towards the windscreen.A full size battery carrier can now be fit.I was the same, the bleep s at ARB at Taren Point were extremely rude they said they could do it but it would cost me over $1,000.When I did it I took it back to them and showed them how easy it could be achieved.

I'll have to try your idea on the weekend. I already have the battery from my previous vehicle (L Series Subaru wagon) So I want to be able to use it.

Hi Mark, had a bit of a play with the current air filter last night and yes, I think it can be made to fit. Will need some modifications to the mounting brackets and some alterations to the plumbing. I now have to wait until I see my mechanic next to put forward this latest idea. Will keep you informed of progress.
