Do any of you forumites know of any good bush camping sites (preferably free from the maddening crowds) (forumites not included in the maddening crowds catagory) , within the Dingo Tops/Werrikimbee National Park area. ( NSW north of Newcastle)

Any hints on how to get there, including GPS co-ordinates would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers and Thanks

Paul,

I was up around Taree in January and went for a drive up to Ellenborough Falls, The road past there went up to Dingo Tops. There is a great are there with BBQ facilities. Plenty of area to camp, Did not see any signs about not camping.

It is easy to get there. From Taree to Wingham and then follow Tourist Drive Signs to Ellenborough Falls. The Falls are among the largest in Southern Hemisphere with a 260 metre drop. A track has been built down to the bottom with over 600 steps almost straight down. My poor old knees reckon there was 1200 back up. Plenty of rest seats though. Then there is an walk to a viewing area level with the top of the falls.

After leaving the falls follow the Tourist Drive signs along a formed dirt track, past Blue Knob Lookout and then around to Dingo Tops. Any camping shop, caravan park in the area will have maps.

It was a great drive which we did easily from Taree and back in a day.

Quite a few tracks up there to explore

Hope this is what you were looking for

Gary

Hi Paul,

You can camp at either Dingo Tops or Maxwells Flat. I have been up there a couple of times and stopped off for lunch at both places but never camped. Both places look ok and have some facilities, water, toilets and bbq from memory. Last time we were at Maxwells Flat it was pouring down rain and half the road had been washed away so we had to make a slight detour.

Maxwells Flat camping area - Lat S 31 29.220' Long E 152 11.189'. These coordinates are from a book I have so I can't vouch for their accuracy.

If you purchase the Lower North Coast and Mid North Coast Forest maps you will find them easily enough.

Mooraback Camping Area in Werrakimbe - never gets crowded, new toilets and self registration - right on the river, good level grassed area, cememt slabs and swing arm fireplaces and table at each campsite.

Absolutely great place.

It is detailed in the Ron & Viv Moon "Discover Australia by 4WD" book, listed under the trek "The Werrikimbe Wilderness" - which is an excellent couple of days drive.
