Oziexplorer on a PDA

Hi guys,

HELP!!! We have bought the PDA, and downloaded the oziexplorerCE. However we are having a bit of trouble understanding how to use the img2ozf file to reformat the maps for the PDA. Can anyone explain this simply (I'm a bit computer illiterate!), and/or send me to a website that has a help file.
Hope a forumite can help us
Anne

Anne, I am assuming you have the file you want to convert on your PC. If so, open Image to Ozf and select the folder on the PC that has the maps in it in the "Source Image Folder" bit of the program. You also neeed to specify where you want the output (or ozf2 file) to go. You go find the map you want in the map names box and click the tick beside it, or them, and then click on "Process Image file to OZF2 files" and wait. Once its done you can copy the files to the PDA in Windows explorer. You also need to set up OziExplorerCE to know where to look for the maps. Its easy.

Thanks Bonz, Thank goodness you live to serve! I think this will help us. Sometimes things are simple if someone can just explain them in a clear way.

Anne , unless you have large storage capacity on your PDA you will have to resize the zoom & color levels on the maps other the file size is huge compared to original. I used 50% zoom & 16 color to fit Natmap cd's onto a 1gig expansion card + 256meg onboard card with 65meg to spare. It also takes age's to convert them

Thanks Bob,

The img2ozf file actually shrinks the maps to fit the PDA. We reckon (with advice) that we can fit about 1400 kms worth of maps converted with this program, so we should only need to download things each day or so. It also seems to be quite quick.

Anne , I did the whole Natmap series at once took 28hrs so I have whole off Ozi on the PDA & don't have to change maps each day. If you check the file size for converted & not converted maps you will see the ozi 2 files are a lot larger unless you change the zoom & color settings. There's an ozi ce users group on yahoo thats very helpfull

Anne - The size of the resulting OZF file could in fact be bigger than the original file size prior to conversion. It is dependent of the original file format (and the settings you use). Some file types (eg ecw and jpg) are already in compressed format - when converted to OZF (with no change in size or colors) the files actually end up bigger.

Anne - if you havent already read the help file that comes with OziCE - it has an entire section on converting the maps to OZF format. Some additional info and the actual program for conversion is here

Thanks Greg,

I'm sure I must be computer challenged, because I have already looked at the sites you have suggested, but they just don't tell me what I need to know! I need instructions in words of one syllable!

Ive Just put a Navman GPS sleeve on my Ipaq 3630 with a 512MB CF Card for the maps. Installed OziExplorerCE and have copied the Hemma GDT maps straight across as they are already ozf2 format. Also copied LPI topo maps across but they needed converting to ozf2 format. If you are using the maps with a GPS you also need to have the files with the .map extension as this holds the calibration information the GPS needs to work with.

There is no need to make a copy of your .map files during the ozf conversion process as OziCE will happily use the same .map files as used by original map on the PC. I think this option is simply provided for those who plan on using the original map and the Ozf map on there PC - creating a seperate ozf *.map file prevents confusion arising as to which map image to open. Not a problem on the PDA as you can only use OZF maps anyway.
