I have a 98 3 l Hilux diesel. The timing belt light has come on at 141,000 ks. My mechanic is doing the belt this week but doesn't know how to reset the timing belt warning light on thi smodel.

I know that there is a wire behind the speedo that needs to be reset. This is my problem, looking at the back of the speedo there are three holes, the far right has the tbelt wire screwed into it at present, the middle hole just has a screw in it and the left hand hole is empty. Does anyone know which hole the tbelt wire needs to be moved to and does the screw in the middle hole need to be moved as well.

Thanks in advance

According to the proceedure I have which came from the Toyota workshop manual,
move the right hand wire and screw into the left hand hole. Leave the centre screw where it is. I have the proceedure at home and I am at work at the moment.
Let me know and I can fax or e-mail it to you.

Scooby,

Thanks for that, I will try tonight when I get home, if there are any probs I will get back to you.

Bit of a bugger trying to get the hand in behind the speedo to disconnect the cable but at least it is a snap on fit rather than a threaded thingi.

Cheers

No probs. Two screws in the plastic surround above the speedo, one in the far left corner next to the radio, then just prise the facia panel out of the dash, would help if you have finger nails (leave no marks where a screw driver would if it was use as a pry).

Once the facia is off there are 4 screws that hold the instrument cluster in place. Make sure you have clean hands and there is no dust in the air as the perspex speedo cover will more than likely pop off at this stage, if it does leave it off its easier to work without it popping off constantly.

You will now be able to move the cluster forward an inch or two before the speedo cable takes up. With your delicate lady like hand going in where the centre air vents were you can reach the speedo cable. The cable has a clip that you will feel, while pushing in the clip gently pull back on the cable and it should come off. You can now pull the cluster out so you can get at the back of it, leave the wiring loom in place.

After doing what you suggested with the tbelt light screws it is a reversal of the above. The only pain was getting the speedo cable back on, a bit of a fiddle to line it up, but then it just "snaps" back into place.

Being careful not to touch the cluster if the perspex cover is off just pop everything back into place. Took me about an hour, next time should be about half that I hope. For a simple operation I didn't want to pay the mechanic at $75 per hour to discover how to do something that he should know. Apparently earlier Hiluxs just needed a spike to poke in a recess behind a plug in the front of the speedo, that he knew.

Cheers

Scooby,

Moved the screw and wire to the left hand hole and nothing happened, i.e. the Tbelt light was still on, took it for a drive for about 4 ks just in case that was needed to "click" over the speedo, nothing happened, removed the wire from the screw, taped it up i.e. the wire is now not connected to anything and the tbelt light will now come on when you turn on the ignition and go off when the engine is started.

Now all I have to do is remember to replace the tbelt in another 100k ks or so!

Would appreciate a copy of Toyota manual process, can you email to buggerlux@emailaccount.com

Cheers

Hi Time,
Iam sorry, have given you a bum steer. After reading the method carefully, the centre screw is moved to the left hole and the wire is left where it is. Will send method to your address. Hope this hasn't stuffed you around too much.

Scooby,

Received the email with attachment on the screw position. Thanks for that, I've had the instrument cluster out a couple of times now, it is a pretty simple procedure, half an hour or so, so no great hassle with the "bum steer".

Having the cluster out also helped with being able to tidy up some of the under dash wiring, could get in and run cables a bit more neatly than they had been before. Interesting that my Service Book and these notes make mention 150,000 ks for the light to come on, the light actually came on at 141, 232. Still having belt changed though, better safe than sorry I guess.

Cheers

Scooby,

Moved the middle screw to the left hand hole, left the wire where it was and it worked.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers
