prado auto lacks acceleration when cold

My prado 2002 td on a cold morning has no acceleration when i first drive off in the morning. The local dealership has found no fault codes in the system although every cold morning it takes 5 to10 minutes before i can accelerate. Has any one had this problem? The car starts ok but will not accelerate when drive is selected.

John,

The cold weather may be waxing the fuel a bit, causing reduced fuel flow through fuel filter and injector pump. Haven't seen this too often, usually once the fuel waxes, it's "no go Doreen"

Try pouring boiling water over fuel lines to see if it makes any difference, or allow it to idle for some time before you drive off. Only thing the neighbours mightn't like this.

In many parts of Europe, distillate is 'winterised' by the addition of petrol - up to 10%. This will inhibit the wax from forming. Normally one litre in a full tank of distillate is sufficient - depending on the minimum temperatures of course.

It sounds like low gear isn't being selected.
When drive is requested, the transmission initially selects third
gear and about half a second later, first is selected. This is done
to provide a smoother engagement when drive is selected.
If you've ever been in neutral, quickly selected drive, and tickled
the go pedal a bit too soon, the initial engagement of third can be
felt with very weak acceleration, then it takes off when first is hit.
Maybe someone else can confirm, but usually 1st 2nd & OD are selected
with solenoid valves in the transmission, the default in drive being
third gear, torque converter unlocked. Therefore if selector
galleries in the tranny are clogged (or under pressurised) or
transmission computer is not sending any control signals to the
transmission, third gear is selected regardless of vehicle speed,
engine load or any other factors.

Does it feel as if it is in third gear? Try a standing start on a
very steep hill in high range and it may produce a similar effect.

If power is quite normal in reverse, I would suggest the problem is
not with clogged injectors or low fuel pressure.

Hi Glenn
Interesting post of yours from the 90s list as I think the last part was mine, only just happened to me again yesterday( 72000 now )reversed OK go to drive & nothing, you could be right about 3rd gear,
it's not related to how cold it is.

Cheers

As many have found on LCOOL 90 Series Prado Group the 3.0 1kz-te engine is not a stunning performer when cold, and will always need afew minutes of warming up, before "full power" will, and should be used.

Some idea of overnight temps, and if the car is garaged or under cover will help decide if fuel freezing is the actual issue.

Can't confirm weather it's a stunning performer in cold weather or not, as Perth doesn't really get that cold! ;-) I do know that my surf loves cooler weather (1kz-te) but it is designed for Japan temps! However I do agree with go_offroad, you should be warming the ol' girl up beore sticking your right foot in anyway, and the neibours won't give a crap because the 1kz-te is so quiet while idling they won't even notice!
Regardless of the temp I always warm up the car for 5 mins or so first thing in the morning, I hit the "idle up" button and let her go.
