May be of interest to some of us. On NITV tonight at 8.00pm. (Well, in Qld anyway)

"The Wandjina, spirit guardians of one of the last great wilderness areas on Earth, watch over a land ruled on the coast by some of the most ferocious tides in the world, and in the inland by fresh water, falling water or no water at all. Everything in the Kimberley in northwest Australia has adapted to live with the cycles of running water and extremes of wet and dry, and to survive the long periods of drought between the torrential monsoon rains."

Thanks Allan. Doesnt show on their NSW program. Did some googling and discovered that there was a highly regarded ABC series on the Wandjina back in 1966. The tapes (remember them?) are said to have been destroyed, being no longer politically correct.

Cheers

Hi John.
It was a bit old, being directed and narrated by Leo McKern who died in 2002.
But age has its charm(!) as it cut to the chase sans all the whoopee effects of today. I enjoyed it.

As for tapes..... they were possibly destroyed by being wrapped around the capstan as were many in my old videotape player that also died around 2002.
Cheers

Thanks Allan. Really enjoyed it too.

Have been fascinated by that Prince Regent River area since coming across a magazine(can't remember the name, but similar to the now defunct Walkabout mag) with some typically charismatic Kimberley photos throughout the article.

Re destruction of old "stuff", heard a program on ABC once where the interviewee was describing the amount of material destroyed, literally tonnes 'n tonnes of tapes and those old heavy records of old radio plays and serials.

S'pose that's progress, eh?

OOOoooops!! Allan, I failed to notice that you actually posted yesterday (Saturday) and reading it today (Sunday) interpreted "Tonight" as meaning Sunday. I should stay more up to date!

Perhaps it's timely to point to an ABC program on Monday night that looks like our sort of thing - "Backroads" at 8pm.

Cheers

Sorry about the 'day' mixup John.
I did consider putting "... Today (Saturday)..." for that very reason but thought I may appear as a pedantic old fool (Rather than just an ordinary old fool).

Yes, "Backroads" looks promising. First-up is 'Ceduna'.
The series will take us to places we cannot go whilst we are stuck at home. Saves on fuel too! lol

Yes Bob, I sometimes consider what would be the current value of all things I disposed of such as phono records and my first car (a 1927 Austin 7). But I would have collapsed under the weight of retaining them. Progress looks more attractive than the alternative!

Enjoyed the show. Just have to go back.

Would have been better to see it before we went. But that's life.

HI Allan, inadvertently found our DVD of said program. Label says year of production 1991 with the DVD being copyright 2004 ABC. Will have to go and watch it again as I have no recollection of it at all. LOL.... W
