Anne Beadell Hwy grading and Emu to Maralinga Rd closed

I'm wondering if anyone can confirm the following:-
1)Robin ( or someone) has graded the ABH from Mabel Creek to Emu ( and presumably Volkes Hill Corner now)

2)That Emu to Maralinga Road has been permanently closed by the Maralinga lands council.

Good and bad news if they are both true. I haven't found Robin to confirm this.

Ok i am partly answering my own Question. Just rang the lands Council. They confirmed the Maralinga to Emu Rd has been permanently closed. I guess that isn't to much of a surprise given some vandalism at Stonehenge.

From memory it was graded to Vokes Hill corner.

Yes t that point it was Emu to Volkes Hill, I confirmed that with Maralinga at the time. I understand it has now been done to the eastern part of the Maralinga lands or further. That's what I would like to confirm. There was a piece on it in the weekly Westprint mail out. I would like to confirm that.

Boobook,YES on all counts with a few BUTS......

The ABH was graded from Volkes back in April all the way through to Mabel Creek by Robin. The Air force came through with a bit of extra money for diesel which allowed him to take it all they way through to Mabel from Tallaringa. It was not without it's challenges though and if you ever get to hear Robins story of how he and the mate walked the grader out of a bog inch by inch using the blade (it took a couple of days), you will both marvel and piss yourself laughing. He also graded the full length of the Emu-Maralinga Road.

I was there in April with the crew as MT provided permission for our quad expedition retracing the route of R.T. Maurice through Maralinga and up towards the Everards. As usual Robin was a great host and we finally got to undertake his awesome range tour before heading off on the quads.

Yes the emu road is currently closed although MT Council are honoring access for groups who had prior bookings. It needs to be remembered that Emu Road access does not guarantee access to stone-henge and that is something that has to be negotiated.

I was speaking with Robin at length last night so this is quite a timely question. It is hoped that in the next few months a decision will be made around use of the Emu Road. Robin hopes this will be positive given the tourism potential for the MT people.

Many may be relieved to know that there has been a change in General Manager in the last couple of months with the previous and somewhat abrasive bloke now gone. The new person (cannot recall her name) is keen to develop opportunities that may provide opportunities for the young MT people and as we know in that area, tourism is a big winner.

As usual Robin has a few irons in the fire with a view to adding even greater interest and appeal to a visit to Maralinga so I'm keeping my fingers crossed (Sorry sworn to secrecy ;-)

Mate knowing corrugations like I do, I'd say that this late in the season, Robins efforts will be a distant memory however.... he has hopes of making grading a yearly thing in some of the worst areas.

Bit of a write-up HERE.

Cheers and safe travels

Mick

Ah Mick, you have been missed on EO.

Do you know if Robin happened to widen that god dammed Section east of Emu?

Also when you refer to the GM leaving. I guess you mean the GM of the council, not the Maralinga nuclear site yeah? I understand that the one year term for that comes up in about November.

Good information - thanks guys.
Heading off next week along the ABH. So will report back on how well the corrugations have developed!

Just a point about spelling of names. Bill Voakes was part of Maurice's 1901 expedition. So Voakes Hill and Voakes Hill corner were named after him.
So its not Volkes or Vokes or any other of the misspellings that we find all over the place. The Natmap 250k map got it right and spelt it Voakes - both at the hill that you can drive to, and at the corner. Hema and Westprint have spelt it wrong on every map they have produced.

Cheers, Phil

And none of them have been spelling it Volkes Hill like I have been. That old VW marketing from the 1960's must be working.

Thanks

Phil and all. Just got it from the horses Mouth.

They graded from the vermin proof fence about 54km west of Mabel Creek through to Voakes Hill Corner, then for 60 km south on the road to Cook.

It will be interesting to see what the road is like and if it's any wider east of Emu.

Have a good trip.

Yes. I had also heard that it was just a single blade, so it might not be much wider.
These guys filmed it in May 2016:Youtube video of ABH

The top section on the Voakes Hill to Cook road was getting a bit overgrown. The Friends group cut it back a bit about 10 years ago. Then when Rodinia, the ex petroleum exploration company put some extra roads through, the Cook road got realigned - to avoid several aboriginal rockholes including Bryngina which is what Len Beadell used to align the road in 1961. I did hear some years back that the intention was to realign most of it so that Muckera Rockhole and Waldana well were also inaccessible to tourists. Its a real pity for us, but I understand totally as the Oak Valley community take a keen interest in this great part of Australia.
Anyway I'll report back with all the news in about 3 weeks. Been some more good rain this week - hopefully no more for now!
