Terracan to the High Country

Well I finally picked up the new Jerry Can yesterday and have only driven it to and from work.

BUT tomorrow it all starts. I'm taking "her in doors" up to Mansfield for the weekend and will be getting the new bus dirty. Will try some of the easier tracks to start with and progress from there.

I'll report back on Sunday or Monday as to the state of the tracks and the performance of the Jerry Can.

I ran mine in with a nice 1,400km trip thru the Flinders. Just careful not to do anything too strenuous but gave it a good run.

There are sources that say that running in is all over after the first 50km.

As the handbook says there is no formal running in period these days, but don't thrash it. A gentle drive through the bush shouldn't do it much harm; low speed, low engine revs; gotta be better than city driving.

just finished rebuiling a 3.5 v6 today same as yours took it to the hilly roads near my work and gave it nearly heaps up the hills they like to be loaded up.

There is a fellow on the web that runs a site on bike engines but he says the advice applies to most types of combustion engines. It is all about seating the rings. If you treat it too gently the rings don't seal properly all the way around leading to later poor performance. It is the first 20 miles is most important (about what many new cars have on the clock when delivered). Use it as normal from the start but just don't thrash it or redline it and don't sit on the same revs for too long in first 1000kms seems to be the general opinions.

Damned if I can find the site now but it is late so I did not spend alot of time searching.

If it is of any help to you I only had 162Km on my Teeracan when I hooked up my Camper Trailer (1000Kg) and drove from Bathurst to the Grampians (Vic) for a couple of weeks. I took it easy and did not drive the Tarracan hard and it never missed a beat. I now have 14500Kms on it and not one little thing to complain about. I actually took it for my first real "Off Road" here near Bathurst last weekend I was very pleased with its' performance "Off Road". They are not the "toy" that some biased people say they are.
For the price they are bloody good value.
I am one extremely happy Terracan owner. I have also noticed a few more of them getting around lately.

Bloody brilliantly. Went to Craig's Hut last Friday and the last part of the track was wet and greasy and it got through no problems. It scraped the belly a liitle a couple of times but nothing to worry about.

I bought the Highlander auto which has hill descent control, FANTATSIC. Simply engage low range and first gear and it creeps down the hill at about 8 km/h with more control then I could with using the brakes.

I fitted Toyo Open Country A/T Tyres prior to delivery and reckon they helped in the greasy stuff. Sure, they're not M/T's but they're a lot better than the standard fit road tyres.

Her in doors reckon's I'm mad (she's probably right) taking a brand new vehicle and covering it in mud, the run to sheepyard flat really filled the wheel archs, butbleepit was fun.

I bought a 4wd to use 4wd, not to ponce around the suburbs. The fact that it is a fine performing luxurious form of transport is a bonus.

After 6 days of ownership I couldn't be happier.

Was impressed to see that both my dvd player and the mp3 player didnt skip a beat on the rough 4x4 tracks at all. After having a old GQ patrol found the way it handles a far lot better. did you take any pictures while you were up there I plan to this weekend and I will post them next week

On the way up I filled at Lilydale, drove to Mansfield, then up Craig's Hut and back and filled again, got 15.5 L/100 km. Form there next day dove to top of Buller, on the way back went out to Sheepyard Flats, then next day drove home to Berwick; combination of Hwy, Off-Road and city, gave me 14.6 L/100 km. This week will be al city so I'll see how it goes.

We might have to catch up sometime not to far away from each other I live in Sale and compare notes Take the terracans 4x4 around the area will be in Melb for the month of Aug for work what colour did you get I wanted the sandstone buy end up getting a white one that they had in stock made me a offer I couldnt refuse. Got my side steps on it today they really look great next will be the bullbar once i decide what one to go for

Mine also has the new interior colour. The previous model had black leather where mine is beige. Whilst it will take some keeping clean, I had a look at the demo model (black interior) at the dealers today (whilst getting my 1000 km service) and am far happier with the beige.

my interior is the black cloth and so far I have found that it shows every bit of fluf have order the cloth car seat covers for the front they also only come in black have ordered the floor mats only come in black as well a little disapointed that they dont have seat covers for the 2 rear set of seats. so you got the highlaner then would have liked to get that model but was out of my price range. One thing with the black interior when you tint the windows it makes it look alot darker brought the white due to moving to th NT in SEP04 metalic colours tend to fade quickly up there also white stays cooler so they say. Sandstone is the goldy colour looked at the silver thought that there to much silver with the whole car being silver but like you I liked the new interiorcolour better also brought a manual even though I could have a atomatic for the same price mainly for the long distance I tow my boat. Did you get any extras on your car I'm looking for a bullbar at the moment not happy with the factory nudge bar

Sure is a lot of silver on my car, but it doesn't show the dirt ( don't have to wash it as often, but the white would be similar).

I reckon the nudge bar is useless and don't need a bull bar in Melb for the bush work I plan to do. I had a bull bar on my GQ when we lived in Townsville and I did some night travel. These days I would question the value of putting an extra 70 kg over the front axle (the suspension is soft enough already).

Would also like to talk to you about NT. I plan to visit there at some stage when I can can convince HID.

(So i will miss the fuel economy of 10l - 100Klm). But I love the Terracan and have been researching the purchase for some time. Your fuel usage is about right. I filled up yesterday after a week off all city driving, a lot of it peak hour 373 km, 64.8L, equals 17.4 L/100 km, or 16.3 mpg in the old money. The best I have had was 14.6 l/100 km or 19.3 mpg but that was mostly country Hwy stuff.

My home phone is 0351443767 work 0351467298 ask for SGT Donoghue work hours 7:30 to 5:00 each day home after about 5:30 how does the terracan compare to your GQ patrol I think its a lot better than my old patrol the best thing so far is the stoping towing the speed boat at 100kms the patrol would skid if I applied the brakes but the terracan pulls up in the same distance but under control go the ABS the terracan feels like a car unlike the patrol it drove like a tank

PS I will be home all night tomorrow give me a ring
