The motor you got is a 1PZ and is a 3.5 ltr 5 cyl version of the 6cyl 4.2 ltr 1HZ.
As far as I know the 4.2 is a straight swap. I looked at a 5cyl and 6 cyl side by side a while back and couldnt see nothing out of the ordinary.
I would recondition the 5 cyl.A few of the German guys on Buschtaxi have these and are quite happy with the accelleration only noticing the missing cyl when towing.
My 2nd choice would be a 4.2 diesel (adding another cyl is a very practical performance mod ).
Both my suggestions would save you a heap of work, expense and headaches.

Im not sure of the reasons but Im fairly confident the 3lt and V8 are not a straight swap.The V8 lexus motor only comes with automatic trans and needs a flywheel to be made if keeping the manual , and a specialist for the electronics install .
Good swap if you can nut it out. An FZJ 4.5 litre petrol would also be fun.

Anyway sounds like you got a great project. I bought my 73 real cheap and spent a heap but still ended up with a better vehicle than buying a going concern.

These shorties (pz70) came out with the 5 cylinder predominantly, but also came out with the 1hz 6 cylinder (hz70) for a very short time.
It should bolt straight in, and if it doesnt, there is parts available from Toyota at worst, any 75 series with the hz motor at best.
The next thing to mention is...that where a 1hz will fit, a hdt or hdft factory turbo will aswell. (same block) now that would hammer!
The only thing i can think of is the clutch ctr might be different between the pz and hz. A call in at the nearest clutch outlet will give you an idea as to any differences.
